Double Bass Switch and EQ doubling queston

Thinking of getting a Boss A/b switch and some eq pedal for doubling purposes. I'm using a Rev Solo pickup on my DB, with an Fdeck, into a GK MB115, and a Fender P-Bass. Was thinking of using the amp's EQ for DB, and using a Boss Geb7 to tweak my EQ when I switch to electric. But if I like my amp's eq as is with electric, when I switch to DB, could I use the Geb7 to cut out some of the treble and so forth I've dialed in on my amp for BG, or would that sound weird going through all that EQ for DB, or will the Geb7 be able to override my amp's EQ and sound ok? I almost like former setup idea better, but which scenario would sound better? (I kinda wanted to avoid the Microbass ii, Bassbone, etc. route for now, mainly because of cost, and haven't heard great things about the Bassbone's EQ)

Get a nice preamp for use with DB and run it into the return jack, bypassing the GK preamp entirely. They use the normal GK input for use with your P-bass. You will need to unplug the return jack when you play electric but the eq settings will be unaffected so you are really just engaging the switch on the return jack. You can do the same thing with an A/B switch but I would put the money into the best preamp you can afford.
The Pro-plat is an option but the Headway is stupid good. I have done this many times with various preamps and it works like a charm.

+1
I had a Boss GB 7. Their noisy (hissy), they suck batteries, and the signal strength changes when you disengage EQ.
I'd get a used Pro Platinum or a Headway EDB-1. The Pro Plat is less expensive especially if you get a used one.
My instincts tell me that what you really need is a two channel amplifier. You should consider getting one if you continue to do a lot of doubling.

The Pro Platinum has some very useful features and certainly does the job. My objection to it is that it seems to compress the signal and make it more two dimensional. I have owned both the acoustic version and the bass version and found them both to sound just OK and worth the reasonable price points. I'm firmly in the Headway camp now and thinking it's a very good value due to the amazing sound and simplicity in use. A very well thought out solution for us.

Clink,
The EDB-1 is a pretty amazing little box. It sounds great, and it's affordable. It's one of the few boxes that I know of that will actually work as a pre amp into a powered speaker, the pre amp's that good.

Ric

My amp has no effects loop. Besides the obvious "Get a different amp" answer haha, what would be the next best thing? Run DB thru the Headway and put that and the BG through a Boss A/B?

D Bass 87,
I took a peek at the manual for the MB115 and here's an ideas. Would it be possible to use the Auxiliary Input to connect a pre amp like the Headway EDB-1. You'd have to do some creative work with adaptors but it's worth a shot.
I'd certainly try that with something else before I actually bought an EDB-1, Fishman Pro Platinum, or whatever you decide to use. There's also the Rane AP 13 (which come up used every now and then). It's got two full channels of EQ

Thanks for the suggestion Ric.. it's funny I was looking at the amp earlier and kinda wondering about that little aux input myself haha. It looks like a 1/8 inch input. If I could find my manual I could do a little more research. Would be interested if anybody on the forum has experimented with this already?

Yes. I just got the Headway and have been using it with an MB200 head which also has the aux input. An 1/8" to 1/4" adapter is all that is needed. The jack feels flimsy so be careful with it. Comparing this input to the main input shows how bass heavy and scooped the GK pre is so the aux input is probably better.

D Bass,
Read Clinks post above, as he's already done what you're talking about. Frankly the GK Manual doesn't tell you much other than it's a input for an MP3 player or I suppose a CD player, but that's ancient technology now. I would guess that it's a stereo input so you should be able to Radio Shack you're way from 1/4" mono to 1/8" Stereo with a couple of adaptor's temporarily, until you can make or find. Monster Cable makes a stupidly expensive iPod cable with
two RCA jacks on the other end but that only gets you half the way there.

Ric

P.S. The Product Manual, such as it is is found here

Prolly stereo but I got mono and it works fine. It's a 1/4" mono signal anyway.

Clink,
Yeah, I supposed it doesn't really matter anyway. The jack on the GKMB115 has to be wired into mono cause it's only got one power amp.
With the exception of the original 200MB, and the MBS, and evidently the new MB200 GK voices their EQ sections to compliment EB not DB. It good business sense since
it's a much larger market.
Ric

Hey thanks guys, I appreciate it... Good to hear that it the input can be used, Clink.
As you said earlier Clink about disconnecting the DB from the effects loop when switching to EB, would the same thing apply here?
Also, with the Headway, have you experimented with blending a mic with the pup through it? If you did it this way, I guess you could run the blended signal to the house through the Headway's DI, and split it to the amp as well? I was thinking of just running separate mic to the house and sending the Headway thru the amp only, but that would be another option

I just picked up an ATM 35 on ebay for $100 and already had the Hyper capsule for it so I'm really looking forward to trying it out. Most of my gigs are small duos or trios so I will try it on that. Lots of great players here who can answer your mic/headway questions though.
Disconnecting is probably necessary when going straight into the amps pre but again, be careful with the plastic jack. When I initially saw your post my mind didn't register which amp you are using.

Cool, let me know how that turns out if you want... I've done some more reading on here about it and sounds like many are pleased with the pup only route with this preamp as well... I found one on ebay for 290, that's probably the cheapest you're going to find?...

Btw I realized I actually own one of those adaptors already believe it or not... Several years ago I bought a guitar training computer program, called Interactive guitar or something, that came with one of those adaptors that you could plug your guitar into the computer with, to record etc...
Anyway, i experimented by plugging in my Fdeck through the aux input using the adaptor. It actually sounded pretty good like that, the main thing is a large volume drop compared to the regular input, even with the Fdeck, Master and boost all cranked...
Does the Fishman or Headway give you more volume boost, or will that issue still be there?

The HPF is more of an impedance matching device as I understand it. It may bump the signal just a hair but it can't drive a power amp.

Either the Fishman or Headway can. The Headway might get the nod in that department but it's close.

Ok thanks, you rock man, i appreciate all the help and advice from you guys. Only reason i'm leaning toward the fishman is the price and the fact that i'll mainly be using a pup through the preamp i get.. but the headway sounds great too. Would you recommend using the Fdeck in conjunction with the preamp to control boom or will the Fishman be able to alleviate most of that?

The Pro Platinum raises the input impedance to 10 meg ohm so you're good to go. It's got a "depth control" (lo cut) filter, a phase reverse, optical compressor and a 5 band EQ. The Headway EDB-1 has a very good pre amp, phase reverse, switchable impedance loading, and switchable lo cut filtering. It dose cost more.

All right cool, thanks Ric. I think the Pro Plat's a bit more in my budget for now, and might meet my needs just fine
