Yeah, like so many I started on guitar but never seemed to be able to make the chords with all those fingers in weird positions and finally like so many gave up and became one more bassist who was a failed guitarist.
Was great. Two less strings and you only play one note at a time! Simple! Anyone can do it!
Only since Dad was a drummer I also learned to play drums with that like the old joke started having gigs all over the place. And of course after many years I learned was bass was all about. I learned how a bassist makes the guitarist (as well as everyone on the dance floor) do his will while the guitarist takes all the credit. So which is better? All the credit and no gigs or making everyone do what you want and they don't even know you are doing it? It's that POWER in a bass that really makes it fun.
Now oddly, many years later, I got into songwriting and at the same time returned to guitar to accompany singing. This time I didn't fail. This time I managed to dig what guitar was about. It's simple. A guitarist grabs and holds the audience, a bass player grabs and holds the BAND!
So my advice to you if you want to play bass is to sell your leather pants and start studying how the GROOVE makes everyone do what you want them to. Forget about credit and fame and start thinking about creating ART. Don't worry about a dynamic sparkling personality and DO worry about what kind of basslines motivates people to do different things and you'll do just fine.
