SWR 12 Pack review

Well, I've finally gigged enough with my new 12-packs that I feel that I can properly review 'em. For those who don't know, SWR discontinued the 12-pack 2-12 tweeterless bins a couple of months ago and Zzounds (among others) were blowing them out at $320 each including shipping.

I bought two.

The accompanying amps are Trace Elliot V6 or a Trace Elliot V300H. No stomp boxes or gizmos. Four-string bass.

I have gigged indoors and outdoors. Big hall, small room, stage, floor, tent, the works. So here's my observation:

These are old school. No pretenses to being modern. The drivers (which I assume are Eminence, but I have no evidence one way or the other) are quick for 12s, so they go fairly high -- I'd guess 4k maybe 5k tops. The low end is solid, tight, and powerful. I don't know if they would be ok for a 5er but because they're so solid on my E, I'd guess yes. The lack of tweeter is not an issue for me. I play old music (Aretha, Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, R&B, funky pop, and some rock), finger-style 95%, and these really hit that zone.

Stage clarity is great and I have never had a problem with hearing myself. One of the outdoor gigs, I only brought one bin and it was fine. These handle power very well and it never sounded stressed. I think that 12s are a nice compromise between 10s and 15s and these bins pretty much epitomise that classic R&B/rock tone without the mud.

The drivers are side-by-side rather than angled, so they are a little harder to lug by oneself. But they "only" weigh 66 lbs each, so it's not brutal. I put casters on one bin. I'm also going to try them stacked vertically and my next gig so I can test the "line-array" theory and see if it makes a sonic difference.

In any case, I'm a happy boy. I'm glad that I got two. I'm sorry that SWR has discontinued them, but hey, they never really promoted them so I'm not surprised. They are beautifully made (11-ply birch, tolex, good hardware) and push BIG air. No mud, no crud. Gas gone.

I have been into 12" for a while. I think it is pathetic that SWR didnt promote these cabinets better. I didnt even know they existed until I saw tah AMS had them on sale as a blowout. I got just one 12 pack as I cant justify too many more cabinets until I am in a gigging band again. I already own enoguh cabinets for 4 bass stacks. I need more than one head! But yeah, the 12 pack by itself sounds good and loud. Sounds great with my old school Eden 15" or my Boogie 15"

I find it hard to belive that this cab didnt just soar into popularity with bassists (hobbyists and pro's alike)
Its a trully nice sounding cab with a reasonable footprint that doesnt break your back to lift or hog an ass-ton of stage/studio space.

I just bought one. If there were two available, i may have considered buying a 2nd one right then and there.

The store had both the SWR 12 pack and an Eden 2x12 cabinet. I played both side by side in an opportunity to try them out against each other.

The SWR just sounded nicer to me (otherwise, i prob would have bought the Eden). The 3 other players in the store all agreed. The SWR just moved more air, filled the room with a more quality sound, and its a bit smaller (no tweeter, and smaller birch cabinet than the Eden).

The casters are a nice addition, and the 8 Ohm capacity just made more sense for me (i plan to occasionally add my GK 1x12 Neo to it).

I bought the 12 pack to replace my Ampeg Classic 4x10. My original Ampeg 4x10 is ultra reliable, its always been there for me, and its never failed me.
I feel bad replacing it,..its been that reliable.

The 12 pack just sounds better,..period.

It blows my mind that this cabinet wasnt in every store being played and bought by the masses. It was reasonably affordable,.and sounds wonderful.

Lastly,
Although the Eden lost out in the side by side comparrison when i bought the SWR,.the Eden was clearly a sick cabinet.
The differences between the two were small,..id have been equally happy with that Eden 2x12 (i just didnt want another large cabinet if I didnt have too)

(Great reviews guys,..yer reviews on the 12 pack helped me toward my purchase)
