SWR Goliath III 4x10 question

SWR used to ship with PAS and I have tried to get one repaired in the UK for a 2x10 but we don't have the recone kits so a custom rewind will not garauntee the same power rating of the unit.
MY choice is to bin both drivers ...as I would want a matching pair ..and replace with
a Eminence DeltaLite ii 2510 which seems a popular way to increase power, retain the sound and decrease overall cab weight.

I would think you would have 175watt PAS speakers in that cab so for $200 you could do the same convert and sell the PAS speakers on..altho I don't know about resale value of things like that in the U.S.

The cab should be a well made unit which set the standard at the time which has been much copied, IMO.

If it sounds great at high volume with a 200watt plus amp, then you have a steal..

Only thing that concerns me is why the guy didn't do the repair/recone etc job properly ..

***UPDATE***

Good news Bad news.

Good news is I went up last night to check it out. The seller was very kind and even mentioned this website for info as I was discussing my newbieness to some of these things (I'm more of a guitar guy).

Bad news is that I plugged in, and the right lower speaker was blown or something. Put any power to it, and it made a crazy flap noise and punched out a lot further than the other 3 speakers. Nothing visual wrong when took it out to take a peak. The upper left was replaced with a cheaper version, and upper right a recone.

He was disappointed as well, stated he hasn't used it in a long time but worked fine when he did. No reason not to believe him, but not sure.

Good news, the cab itself as a whole itself is in really good shape, I'd even go as far as to say Excellent condition.

Bad news, could use some casters and either one new speaker, or honestly all 4, which is what I'm thinking. The horn had some his to it when starting to turn it up, not sure if this is normal or not.

Good news, I got it for $100 :D

So that leaves me with more questions :)

What direction do you guys think I should go with and if I decide to replace all the speakers?

Again, I'm running a GK 1001RB head. Warrick Rock Bass 5 String, no pre-amp. I occasionally run my guitar through it with a pod, but most of all, this is a Bass rig for sure.

The main purpose for this rig will be for Modern Worship. Small gigs to large outdoor venues. Most of all tone matters. I personally like the whole Flea tone type thing, but that's just a personal thing.

So priority is Tone, Quality, Reliability. After that power, punch, weight, etc.

Playing slaps, funk, jazz, type stuff is beyond me at the moment and somthing I'm really not interested in, so don't really need a sound for that.

So, speaker suggestions or any other creative suggestions for this cab. It is 700w @ 8Ω

Thanks guys, either way, really appreciated your help so far. I plan to contribute soon as this has already helped me out tremendously.

As I said before, the cab and crossover is worth more than you paid so....great deal.
Here's what I would do.
Put the cab through some high volume listening tests to determine if the other drivers are ok. If so, you can recone the blown PAS speaker and order a matching one to replace the Eminence.

Or, you can call SWR or Eminence to find out what Eminence drivers are the closest match to what SWR is using at present, and replace all four. You could then sell off the remaining drivers here on classifieds. I've seen several posts recently where guys have blown their SWR tens.

If it were me, I'd find four Neodymium speakers to load it with, and sell the remaning good ones.

BTW, Don't count on SWR to sell you anything directly. They have always told me to go through one of their dealers but have always been helpful for technical advice.

Avatar has also seemed to be less expensive on their OEM replacement drivers (Eminence) than the standard retailers, so you could check with them. Any way, you need to have matching drivers to make that cab the best it can be.

I guarantee you can find a better price, that's just what google pulled up.

This is usually true, you DO have to call them, though. The prices for their bass speakers aren't listed on the site.

I'm trying my best to research, just kinda all ignorant on this stuff. I'm LEANING toward replacing all four. Here is why.

One is blown for sure, I can't hear the other ones cause it is SO loud with flapping noise.

One good one is the wrong speaker, and another one is a recone, and the other one is original, an original in which the other 3 have had problems :hmm:

That's why I'm leaning toward all 4.

I like the light weight idea, but I just want to be sure I'm gonna get good tone if I spring close to $400.

What about the horn hiss, is that normal or should I look at horn replacement too. I just want to get it fixed up and not worry about it any more.

Appreciate the input, keep it coming.

Eck. Well, two out of four aint too bad. First, the one that's flapping around is probably blown and is getting beat up by the other three- don't use it like that- you could damage one or more of the other good ones if you do. You can buy a brand new one here:http://cgi.ebay.com/BRAND-NEW-Genui...trkparms=65:12|66:2|39:1|72:1205|293:1|294:50
I have done so, no issues with this seller.
Use it to replace the 'cheaper model' speaker, whatever IT is. Then get the flapping one reconed:http://www.speakerdoctor.com/recone.html
The one that's already been reconed- I'd leave it alone and see how it works, might be just fine.
Neos would be nice- the Golight cab is dimensionally identical aside from neo drivers, so it's an option, but expensive probably.
The hiss is normal.

Dude, those Neo bass drivers are going to sound EVERY bit as good as the PAS drivers it came with. They come standard on some very expensive, excellent-sounding cabinets.

If you would be more comfortable replacing them with the originals, then just do that; it's your cab. If it were me, I'd look for a great deal on some neo drivers...it's a big difference in weight.

JMO of course.

Well......I have a new Golight 4x10 as well as three Goliaths. The Golight sounds great, but not quite as nice as the old Goliaths. Maybe the Golight neo drivers need some more break-in, they are quite a bit stiffer that the old PAS jobbies. Time will tell.
