sx bass mods?

I have been playing bass for 13 years and a year ago found these sx basses. well built bodies, cheap, and made to mod. So far I have only put a thumb rest and put 250k pots in my Ursa 1. I want to put new pickups either dimarrzio dp122 or seymor duncans spb3. does anyone know if there are any issues in installing either of these pickups?

There are a lot of SX posts in here if you're looking for particulars on mods. I prefer the Seymour Duncan in mine. Changed the bridge and tuners and now my SX is damn near as good a player as my fender! The routes for the pickups match up with fender specs really well, so you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck!

I just put some Duncan Quarter Pounders in my SX jazz (the body is the only thing SX on this bass any more)

SX are "made to mod"!

Personally I love the sound of the SX pickups, but my biggest gripe with them is that they are single coil and pick up hum like mad when you use only the neck or bridge alone. Changing to some humbucking style jazz pickups is on my list of mods to do.

My standard mods include copper foil shielding, threaded inserts for neck joint, and new killer pickguard just for looks.

For my preference I like to change the electronics from Vol/vol/tone to vol and a rotary switch that goes: neck only, both series, both parallel, bridge only. You can't mix but can change sound quickly while playing.

A bridge and tuner upgrade makes the bass nicer, but isn't totally necessary though tuners are often stiff and bridge sometimes shifts around and you have to pry on it.

But to me humbucking pickups are the biggie.

I have an SX short scale Jaguar (J/J)... and there is absolutely ZERO hum when soloing either pickup. The only things i have done are add different pickup covers (cream) and string it with some La'Bella flats.

It's my main bass, these days!

If you don't like the sound of the SX pups then you need to make sure that whatever set you get is going to fit. Jazz pups are Jazz pups - you just need to determine if both pickups are the same (MIM Jazz style) or if the bridge is longer than the neck (standard Jazz style).

If the issue is that the pickups hum then it's an easy fix! If you shield the control and pickup cavities, and ground the pickups they get really quiet. If you need help with how to shield and how to do it cheaply I can help.

i've had the Dimarzio "Split P" and "Model P" pickups in my SX P-Bass and they both fit fine and sounded great.

a gotoh 201 bridge is also another great mod to make

The SX bass is a good platform for modifications.
