Me too!! Only thing that puts me off is sinking another couple of hundred quid into the bass - have ordered a bridge, ultralites, SD Antiquities and custom scratchplate - that's £300 spent already...and I still need to get a pro setup...

Pickups can sometimes pick up interference, which creates noise. Being a Jazz bass with single coils (not humbuckers), the bass is that much more prone to noise. Completely isolating the electronics and pickups areas minimizes the possibility of picking up noise. When I split the pickups 50/50, the bass is now DEAD silent, where I used to get an annoying hum/buzz. I still get that typical single coil buzz when I favor either the bridge or neck, but that's kinda common.

The pups are actually stock. I really like the sound of them as they are. I SO wanted to swap them (just cause everything else has been swapped!!!), but I realized it would be a waste of money, and I'd risk stepping backwards from the tone I like.

If you read through many of the SX threads on TB (and there are TONS of them), you'll see that many people dig the stockers. I've got to agree with them. They are not bad pickups whatsoever! Hope that helps... :)

The tone was pretty sweet from the jump with my essex... I think mine is goin on 3-4 years old now...

I recently slapped some dimarzio j's in it and between that and the new strings it really brought it to life. I've been thinking about putting an audere in it, but I really love passive elec.'s.

Still tho, I played my sx out the box for 3+ years before deciding to do anything to it, they're great basses!

BTW Eric, I posted a link to this thread over at RickResource, and one of the luthier fellows there really liked the job you did. I should be getting a used SX jazz (relic'd by belt sander I believe) that I will be doing some major stuff to. It has a maple neck so I may wait to out one with blocks on. I am going to put an EBO pup in the neck position like Mel Shacher of Grand Funk did. If you want to hear/see, check it out.

If it doesn't work out, I'll just put a P pup in there and hide the rout with a pickguard.
