SX PRECISION FOR...

Slapping? I have one. I know they say the better quality basses slap better. how does everyone feel about this bass for slapping an popping? I never really did it before but my new band wants me to add some funk...

P basses aren't as popular as Jazzes or Stingrays for slapping, but their slap sound is great in its own way. The only SX P I played sounded like just about any P-bass, and it had a fine slap sound.

I don't think anyone here is going to be able to tell you whether or not your bass has a good slap sound... maybe you should just try it and find out. Anyway, the real key to a good slap sound is good technique.

IMO, you can slap on a P and its acceptable but not optimal. If I was looking for a bass with the specific purpose of slapping in mind, a P is probably the last bass I would look at. Too much low-mids and not enough high-end pop. EQ really can't compensate since it is mostly a matter of the pickup style and placement. Slapping on a P/J sound good though. If SX makes a P/J-style bass, I would strongly urge you to consider that option or just get a Jazz-style bass.

i don't think its right to say that P bass is not "optimal" for slapping either. While I personally prefer the slap sound of a dual humbucker bass or a jazz, the slap tone of a P could be someone elses favorite. It really just depends on the tone you're going for.

OK, whoa....time out. I never said you can't slap on a P, but I stand by saying it wasn't the "optimal" slap tone. I have slapped on many a P-bass and agree that there is good tone to be had with it, but not as good IMO as a slapped Jazz. There is a Hwy1 P-bass at my local GC and I play slap riffs on it every time I go in there because it is the best-sounding P I've ever heard for slap tone (think the BAII has a role in this). But, I would say the slap tone of a Jazz is widely preferred to the slap tone of a P-bass. IME of course.

To jmcdan3, I misread your original post and thought you were looking for a bass to slap on and was asking about buying a P-bass for that purpose. If you are only looking to use it for slapping on a couple songs, nothing should stop you. Get some good, fresh rounds on there and let 'er rip.

just got some eb regulars slinkys. j slap is too common for me. anyone feel this way? p gives a deep slap that sounds great. back to the original question: do better basses slap better? the sx gets great feedback on here and i was wondering how it compares with others (mim fender).
