SX shortie with flats....NOT

I tend to have that reaction when I put flats on anything

:hiding:

Doesn't keep me from trying it every now and then just in case I change my mind. I don't think my fingers have flat usage in them, they sound like extreme mud to me no matter what bass I have them on...SX, Fender, Washburn...

Another vote for Chromes.

Flats are great. IMO, the bass is almost a different instrument altogether with flats as opposed to rounds. I wish I could clone all my instruments and string one set with flats, the others with rounds.

GHS Bright Flats are ground wounds not flat wounds. Kind of an in between animal but still in the direction of flats - more fundamental as opposed to overtones. I like them on certain instruments. Used them on one bass for almost 5 years. If you don't like dead round wound strings, you probably are not going to like flats or even ground wounds.

Peace,
S

Did you try the flats out with a band, or just by yourself?

In my experience, Flats, like a P Bass, typically sound good in the context of a band, and like ass otherwise.

+1

Flats shine in a band context because they yield a bass sound which contrasts with - and gets under - all of the other instruments.

Assuming that one is using a good amp, flatwounds, which sound dead when played solo, utterly pound on stage.

Well, I have two SX ss basses. A P and a J...which is my main bass until my Stambaugh is ready.

All I use is flatwounds. My faves our Labellas and Chromes. Chromes are what I am using right now. I find they are better for shortscales as they have a little more tension.

Anyway, they feel great & sound great to me. Granted I am not using stock SX basses. Basically, the only thing stock is the body and the neck.
