yeah these are the new stock. The headstock is less nice looking but I doubt the quality has changed.
Well for those prices, I don't mind the headstock. If the neck and the body are solid, then that's a good deal.

I'd like it if it had a maple fretboard. I am so sick of rosewood fretboards on EVERYTHING.

Everybody rags on the headstocks, I don't get it. What else can you get for that price? Even a Squier costs more than that.

I remember reading something a while back about Fender having a problem with the headstocks looking too much like a Fender. So I guess if you want a made in USA Fender with a Fender headstock then you pay Fender prices. Fender American Standard P bass - $1299.99 For $109 I'll take the cheesy headstock spend another $100 or so upgrading it and have nice sounding bass with a funny looking headstock for $1100 less than a MIA Fender.
Hmmm..... well, there are lots of headstocks that look similar to Fender's so I dont see their particular problem with SX. Its a money thing I guess.
I'm with you though on modding them. I have two shortscale SXs a P and a J. I totally re-did the J (the only thing original is the wood) and I am now working on the P.

If that headstock was on a poor quality el-cheapo Japanese bass from the 60's people would be raving about how cool and vintage it was.

Figures I'm waiting forEVER for Kurt to stock his fretted SX P basses again, finally I pull the trigger on a fretless P just to have something to go with my Jazz, then he stocks these. Damnit Kurt!
Calm down and remember the rule: You can NEVER own too many basses!
I'm surprised it was Fender raising hell. I mean the "hooked" headstock looked like so many others that I expected one of those to be the ones complaining. But then Fender is the Elephant in the room. Moses necks had a hooked headstock similar to SX but I see now they've got a license from Fender to produce actual Fender shaped headstocks. So I guess that means that Fender looks the other way on the "hooked" ones.
Yeah. It's obviously all about money.
There seems to be enough meat there to easiliy convert it into a Tele headstock
