SX URSA headstock reshape attempt

hello guys. i just got an SX URSA 5string freless JB and like it but hated the ugly newstyle headstock. so i decided to attempt a reshape from the new ugly style to a style that seems more fitting. i figured that if i screwed it up, it's only a $50 neck. this is what i came up with. Let me know what you think. "better? or worse?" What should i stain it? How i can make the different pieces of maple match better? etc any input. thanks.

Stripped orange tint off with Citristrip.

after sanding, still some more to go. i just dont know what to do about the two pieces being two different colors....:o

what about veneer on top?
I would just paint it, but i have the burst color body so i dont know if just black headstock would look good....
someone told me to "try" to mimic the burst onto the headstock, but i dont really know how good that would look, or how do-able that is....

looks great man!

black would look good.

Thanks a lot man! :smug:

just the headstock front black or whole stock or enitire neck black?

im kinda leaning toward black cuz i dont think stain will hide it, and burst would be uber-hard.

If i paint it, i will dowel the G-string hole and move it farther back.(i dont like how far up the head it is)
thanks again

Your headstock looks good. There is hope for the ursa cursa.:hyper:

FWIW I remember seeing an acoustic guitar that the headstock looked like it was made out of 2 different shades of wood joined at an angle. Both sides contrasted each other and had a thin pinstripe over the seam. I thought it had a very unique look.

lol i meant how did you find the playability, sound etc!? :hiding:

haha! sorry. well i plugged it in (Carvin1000w) and could not get it too mwah at all. even after an hour of eq and a verb pedal wasnt really getting the fletless sound that i wanted.
So i took the rounds off my warwick and threw them on there. Wam! that instantly made a huge difference!
Its better made than i would expect from a $129 bass.
its solid. tuners are decent to the point that i wont change them. I think my only worry would be the bridge, it seems a little flemsy. I couldnt get my B string in the stupid bridge, it was too big. i found that odd.
The finish was the biggest shock to me. Based on the pic of the burst on the rondo site, i didnt get my hopes up for the burst.... but when i opened the box i was shocked! i thought the finish was beautiful. the rondo pics dont even look like it. I think the burst is great!
As for playing, i guess im not a flats guy(the stock ones were probbably horrible anyway) but i plan on epoxying the FB so my rounds dont jack it up.

Besides the wimpy looking bridge, i think its great. i only played it for about 3 hours with a drummer, but it was enough to make me want to keep and and i went home and took the neck off to start messing with it.
As for sound, it sounded like a jazz bass. which for me is good. pickups are bright and clear, i was expecting mud. but its as bright as my ash warwick. with both pups wide open it doesnt sound fretless, which is cool for me. then back of the neck pup and mwah away!
the action was i little high and intonation a little off and i still enjoyed playing it. so i cant wait to see what it will do with new strings and a good setup!
hope i answered your question...
