SX vs. Fender

I guess I was really responding (or adding additional info) more to SBassman's post, which you quoted, than to yours, but it was just more on the same topic either way. These threads sometimes get convoluted with a bunch of intertwined conversations (threads within threads), so sometimes I quote to note which conversation my post might be relevant to.

and i was looking at a P bass(mainly the Highway 1) to fullfill that GAS. so would the SX be good enough to compete with the Highway 1 in terms of performance from new to say 5 years down the road? holding its value somewhat decently over numerous years?

To answer your first question, IMO, it would be an upgrade over your Ibanez. A big upgrade. I'm thinking about selling my Spector, these are that nice. No lie.
How long will they last? I can't say. Mine are holding up very well, but one's only a year and a half old, the others are two weeks old. I don't see any qualms coming up though that would make them any worse then than they are now.
To answer the value question... you gotta keep in mind, you're buying a sort-of off brand, cheap guitar here. You can see they don't start with much value, so you can guess how much they'll retain. Sure, especially on TB, you'll be able to flip them for not a big loss, but outside of here, I wouldn't expect a whole lot.

I don't mean to disagree, but the above is not the case with my SX, they are standard Fender Jazz dimensions. If both pickups on yours are indeed the same size then I'd recommend a new SX owner measure before ordering pickups.

Two of mine are brand new ;). I only measured one of the two, but I don't see why Kurt would go through the hassel of having different pickups in different ones. But, who knows.

I am pretty sure mine (Scorpion) are standard Jazz. I just pulled up the Rondo page and used a little screen capture utility I have to etch rectangles around the pickups in the pictures and the few I checked all had slightly larger bridge pickups. They look about the same, but when you have a rectangle scribed tightly around the bridge pickup you will see a slight space on either side of the neck pickup.

EDIT - I notice Ray has the 5 string. I did my etch-a-sketch trick there and he is correct; they are the same width. But for 4 bangers I think standard J pups work.

Cool. I'm going to have to go home and measure all of mine now! I hope they're normal Jazz sized! :hyper:

so basically what all of you have said is to not be afraid/worried/nervous about buying a $100 bass as an "upgrade"? and that it only costs $100 because they aren't as well known or as renowned as a bass that says "Fender" but costs upwards of $300 more?

so all in all, you guys are saying go for it...
and I think I am going to, because one of the main reasons for looking into a new bass is looks(my ibanez is a little to "metal" for me)

another huge plus for me is that I will have more money to allocate to a good amp rig, for once i get a band together

The BAIII isn't a direct Fender 5 screw replacement like the BAII.


The BAIII is a replacement for the newer Fender 3 screw, string through the body bridge, isn't it?

SX basses are very nice for the money. I've played some nicely modified ones that are well set up and I've played with and seen a lot of them right out of the box in the old NJ Rondo store.

SXes are not as good as MIM Fenders. Not even close. They are not as good as a good Squier either. They may be better if you get the occasional bad Squier, though IME those are few and far between.

They still are very good for the price though, and look beautiful. If you're interested in a straight passive jazz or P bass and are on a low budget, you won't go wrong with an SX.

An SX P will hold its value better than almost anything because it's only $109 to begin with -- there's not much lower left to go.

I've compared my SX side by side with Squiers and it's got better paint, better hardware and the fretwork is better. That doesn't leave much for "not even close" IME, considering it's less than a quarter of the cost of a MIM Fender. These comparisons were stock for stock.
