SYB5 Boss, Is it always supposed to distort?

So I got a used SYB5 Boss Synth pedal, need it for one song so I bought used. The thing is it always sounds distorted no matter what config I set it at, tried it with pedals in front, in back, and stand alone. Is this common or did I get a bad one? I did read to put a compressor in front and a limiter in back to smooth out the volume spikes but this is distortion, I can deal with the spikes. I'm looking to mix just a little for texture. Thanks in advance for the input!

Can you record something with it? I'm not sure if what you're hearing is the way the different waveforms sound and you are unfamiliar with the sound or it's broken.

Record? Ha Ha Ha, I gotta figure that out too? Just kidding (sorta). I this I may run to Sam Ash and see what theirs sounds like. I am kind of wondering if anyone else experienced this. If not, It's broke!

Are you going straight to an amp or into a mixer? If mixer, the channel gain may be set too high.

Mine never distorted. It couldn't track worth spit but it did not distort.

I'm sending it back. Every wave seems to be distorted, so that was a waste of time. Hmm now what to try next. I'm a gluten for punishment.
