Symtoms of a pick-up going bad???

I'm currently playing a 1971 P Bass and my question is simply this:What type of symptoms would begin to occur if a pick-up would be going bad or need to be rewound(if there is such a thing).

pickups really don't go bad.. they get damaged but realy don't fall apart.

Some times I've found severed wires.. clanky magnets etc... many times they can be fixed (especially if they're collectables)
