Definitely not. I'm very interested in learning notation, because though it can be harder to learn than tablature, it's like learning anything for the first time. Practice makes perfect, and notation is much more versatile and detailed than tablature.

I just wanna know how "no" got 1300 votes! :D

I'm not a professional, but I have been paid to play many times, in many different situations, have had a recording deal and have been in bands on TV.

I mostly get given chord charts to make up my own bass lines, but have often been given written lines. I have never been given Tab by any body else!

As a music fan, I have noticed many professionals reading music at gigs or on sessions etc. Of course - lots of rock players don't use sheet music - but in 20-30 years of being a music fan I have never seen any profesional bass player using Tabs or saying they have used them...:hmm:

This is the notation forum. Notation is the language of music. So many people requested tabs for specific songs that Paul decided to create a special forum just for those requests, so that we wouldn't have to weed out the tab requests from the real instruction questions.

You know, they don't give us much light downstairs. That dungeon can be dark and dreary, and at this point in my bass playing career I'm just thinking 2nd position, etc., and I take orders from only Simandl. But, I think I can be convinced every now and then to dust off the official Clan Tabevil cloak, don it just one more time, and call to order the official members of Clan Tabevil.

All present and accounted for? Blinky, Tard, Epiphany, Durrl, and myself, the Tofu.

Okay, how's the mantra go?

Learn a song by tab, great, you've learned a song.
Learn a song by ear or standard notation, and you've built the foundation to learn every song ever written. Ever.

You're ear my friend. Then standard notation and chord charts. It'll take you far. The tabs will send you the other direction.
