I've made it abundantly clear, as have many others, that I see the merits of both systems.

It's not a either/or scenario. Standard and TAB both serve a purpose.

no doubt. everyone is free to seek their own level, but i don't know why those who use tab would try to argue it's on the same level as notation.

I haven't heard anyone argue that.

There is a wide range of values between "totally worthless" and "same level as notation".

I thought just the opposite, mainly because so many people have been saying you can learn a ton of songs quickly with TAB for gigs.

Tabs can be useful to learn a ton of songs quickly.

Standard notation can be even more useful.

Standard notation is much harder to come by, and much more expensive though.

Actually the Italian lute tablature that modern guitar tab comes from and modern notation both can be traced back to about the same time period. If anything lute tablature predates universal acceptance of the five line staff by at least two hundred years. Your argument would work better if you knew what you were talking about.

I find it very difficult to believe someone who is fluent with standard notation would use tab.

I've been reading standard notation for almost 30 years. I'd been reading standard notation and playing upright for about 5 years before I touched an electric.

I'd probably been reading standard notation for 15 years before I first saw a tab.

...but I use tabs all the time. They're a CHEAP, efficient, cheatsheet for getting parts of songs down.

Is the musical experience as valuable as learning the song by ear? Of course not. It's more akin to "cramming" for a test the night before.

It makes a pretty big difference to those of us who get hired to read charts. It makes a big difference when I need to hire a sub, or to refer out a reading gig when I get a call and I'm already booked.

I agree that ignorance abounds in these discussions. But you can take comfort in knowing that you learned something about the history of tablature.

What is a legitimate reason to only learn Bass by Tab and forsake learning a song by ear then? Time is the prominent reason given here. Well, maybe if they don't have the time to ever learn another way maybe they shouldn't play the Bass if it's that low a priority in their life. To me it's important enough to find the time.

Funny you should mention that Jimmy. I know you remember the alt.guitar.bass days before talkbass even existed. This topic was beaten to death back then then and anyone who hasn't figured things out by now is waaaaaay off the back.

At this point I have no problem being ungentle with my opinion of tabwits:
A) They don't know any better.
B) They're too lazy or untalented to learn notation or figure it out by ear.
C) They don't care about accuracy.

OK, so now they're gonna be all incensed and blahblahblah (again) all the reasons tab is the greatest. Folks, I've heard it all before ad nauseum and none of the arguments hold any water. Tab as found on the interweb today is for lazy, half-assed amateurs. Sorry if that sounds harsh but this has been going on way too long and you people need a dose of the straight truth.

So, why are you here? In case you forgot the original point of this thread, it was to ask why spend time learning TAB when you could devote that time to reading music, AND like others have said, it is very unredundant to point out the advantages that reading music has over reading tabs. Maybe a few will realize this and change course because they do want to become better musicians.

People who learn to read music learn theory beforehand, which definitely will make for a better musician.

Some people may.

I certainly didn't.

I had been reading music for 2-3 years before we ever covered any real theory.
