Home Depot sells stainless steel cable that would be suitable to use for tailgut.

Braided steel cable and hammer clamps is what I always used when replacing a steel monofilament tailgut on old basses. I tried Kevlar cord but it killed the high end so off it came. Make sure you have the afterlengths tuned to one seventh of the speaking length of string or weird stuff happens.

I use 1/16" 133 strand coated aircraft cable, with a cylindrical aluminum clamp. Super flexible, light, and not elastic at all. I don't know why anyone would use anything else.
