Double Bass Tailpice placement

I am not clear on tailpiece placement. I need to replace my endpin so I will be removing my tailpiece and will switch from coathanger to braided aircraft cable. I have a question about where the tailpiece should be. Mine is currently about 6-8 " up from the bottom of the bass....All the pics I see of basses have the tailpiece at the very bottom will it change my sound and is there a measurement I should use?

Yes. Try to tune the afterlengths to 2 octaves and a fourth higher than the strings ie A D G C - it helps.

Thanks I think a get it but How do you do that? I guess I pick a spot then check tuning and recut the tailwire? Is there a baseline to start from?

The further away you can set your tail piece from the bridge the better. A longer after length will give you more sound. I agree setting the after length pitch to a high 4rth makes the bass more resonant.
Of course allot depends on the bass.

Maybe, maybe not. On my bass, I ran the TP from bottom to about as high as possible in increments and the sound didn't change to my ear. The feel got a bit softer.
