I think the whole 'bowablilty' issue with spiros is some sort of urban legend or government conspirisy; I've never had any problems with them, and I know several other people who bow them all the time with no problems. They may not be as smooth as some other strings, but they're definately not the devil like people make them out to be...

I started symphony season with Spiros left over from a summer of pizz, gave it my best effort. They suck. Final proof was when I put on Eudoxas for the concert; I felt I had to, since the cello soloist was playing a Strad. Next to them, arco on Spiros is a bad joke.

I`m a Red Neck from Tennessee...work with me here folks Anyway, this tube...uhh..Thingy..for lack of a better word does help with Arco but I could not tell a difference Pizz. I did not say Spiros were great under a Bow its just I think they do fine. Now if I were to play only Orch. of course Spiros would not be my chose but I dont see why they have the bad rep they do. I`m not trying to change this Topic as this has be talked about many time before. Thanks....

Edgar uses 'em. Maybe they don't suck for everybody...

Only on the E & A. I think Flexocors on the D & G. The E & A Spiros are the least scratchy in my experience. I used Spiros from 91-99, and when I decided to get serious, I found they were really limiting on getting a good arco sound. A good player like Edgar can get a good sound on any string. I had a conversation with Schertler once about the bowability of the Velvet 180's (old formulation), and it was like talking to a brick wall because they had heard them played in person by some monster European player. It was only after they got numerous complaints that they conceded that this guy could bow fencing wire and sound good.
