"Take Five" in 4/4??

XL's version of "Take Five" just came on Sirius' Jazz Cafe channel. It's in 4/4 time. Isn't that kind of losing the intent of the song? Yeah, I understand wanting to create a modern take on a classic, but keep the 5/4 time at least. Geez.

Ever hear of Don Ellis? He was known as someone that seemingly always re-invented a tune in Odd times..."Freedom Jazz Dance" in 7, for example.
Anyway, one of my favourite lines-

Charlie Haden once said-
"The only tune Don Ellis plays in 4 is 'Take Five'".

...I never knew there were others!

The XL version instantly reminded me of US3's "Cantaloop".

Yes I've got that on a CD and I really like it - in many ways more than the original! Tito Puente did several Jazz classics in a Latin, Afro Cuban style - another favourite is Freddie Hubbard's "First Light"

Jazz is all about re-interpreting and re-arranging material - putting your take on simple material like Blues or popular songs and making it your own through improvisation, chord substitution etc. Classic being Coltrane taking "cheesy" (?)songs like "Night has a Thousand Eyes" or "My Favourite Things" into his sound world!

In fact the only real sin in Jazz would be to play an exact copy of what somebody else played!

I agree with that. Jazz would be horribly boring otherwise. I checked out Tito's version and I dug it.

But since the song is named "Take Five", it just seems wrong to me. Jim, you nailed it with the US3 comparison. My thoughts exactly.

I did a gig with a vocal group not long ago. Take Five was one of the tunes. At one point in the chart the note said "Jake sings Moondance". I wondered how it was going to work. It sounded really cool hearing the Take Five groove with Moondance sung over the top. As Bruce said music/jazz is about rearranging and putting a stamp on the music.

I'm pretty sure the Chemical Brothers version is in 4/4 if I remember right. It's been a long time since I heard it though.

after years of playing take five in 5/4 i think itd be weird trying to pull it into a 4/4 feel. i'd like to hear it, especailly since someone mentioned tito puente doing it? i'd love to hear that..

It worked well. Got even more interesting when the other two singers added Take Five lyrics and a wee bit of Evil Ways.
