i've been getting into playing my P-bass with a pick...which pick do you like and why? i've been a finger style player my whole life and kinda recently tried a pick...it sounds awesome! and it's fun...torn between Tortex 1.14 and the green .88...

I go between those two all the time. Purple and green

I use a Dunlop Tortex pick (.60). I like it because it has more clarity than fingerstyle, more attack, and I like how the notes ring out more instead of just sounding like a quiet, dull thump.

I use Jim Dunlop USA Nylons in .60mm. The light gray ones. A lot of other bass players say they're to flimsy, but I feel like they are perfect for playing hardcore and punk music. Just thick enough to get attack but not too thick to slow ou down.

Steve Clayton triangle acetyls, .80mm. All I've used for 20 years. So good, I endorse 'em!

I'm a fan of the blue Tortexes; that is, 1mm on the dot. Though just now I found this old Fender oval pick, heavy gauge...I really like it.

I don't use pick that offend any more, but when I do I prefer Jim Dunlop gray 0.88 mm.
Not too hard, not too soft for my liking.

2.0 Gator Grip or 3.0 Gravity Waves for me.... the others are just too thin for my liking.

I play fingerstyle most of the time, but I always carry a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] in my wallet. So far the most comfortable pick I've used.

Dunlop Big Stubby 2.0 here. Good, solid pick with no clackiness, and indentations for your thumb and finger gives a no-slip grip!

Was a big user of the purple and blue Dunlops and Clayton Acetal Polymers.

I've moved on to a meaner pick, that takes 10X longer to wear and is stiffer(yet not any thicker):

check out the relatively new Dunlop Ultex .....in 25 years of guitar playing i beleive this is the best pick ever! for tone and playablity/ accuracy!

The Ultex was the ones I used right before the Carbon picks. They were my 2nd faves.

I don't play with picks so much but in some of the tunes I play it's needed, my favorite is the 0.73 Tortex, the yellow one.

I'm a fan of Dunlop Big Stubby 2.0mm. I've tried thinner ones and they've just bent over the strings, and I just couldn't get the feel for it when I borrowed a 3.0mm from my guitarist so I've just stuck with what I know works after that.

Different materials sound different. Besides the usual Everly star picks I sometimes use wood picks. Also got a bunch of weird stuff such as coconut shell, mother of pearl, leather or felt. I wouldn't carry all these on stage (actually I haven't used a pick on stage in ages) but sometimes they can bring that extra something to the tone when recording.

Either triangular tortex or nylon ones! I usually go for .73mm or similar. Tried some thicker ones but I just can't handle them.

Try Dunlop Primetone Poly. They're made for bass, and come in 3mm and 5mm.

I use a Dunlop Big Stubby in 5.0 or 3.0. Big old monsters, but I love the feel.
