Taking Off and Putting On a String?

I need to adjust my truss rod but on my bass I have to remove a string to be able to actually turn the Allen wrench. If I remove a string, will it still sound fine when I put it back on? Or will it sound dead? I read somewhere that you should not take a string off and put it back on again but thought I'd ask actually knowledgeable people first

A string can probably endure many stretch-relax cycles before it is compromised to the point you hear it as "dead."

Take only as much tension off as needed to move it to the side while you adjust the rod. I wouldn't take all tension off or completely remove the string unless absolutely necessary.

Do you have to take it completely off?
I put on a new nut and only had to loosen the strings and pull two to each side.

You should be able loosen the string enough to move it over without removing it.

See if you can get your hands on a long handled allen key. They look like an allen key as long as a screwdriver, but with a t-bar handle. Many basses can be adjusted with these with total clearance from the headstock.

Will look into that actually. My bolt is turned in such a way that there isnt enough room on either side to lock in the Allen wrench because of the small hole the bolt is located in. Would be a big help! Thanks!
