Like most, my opinion is based on a few YouTube clips, mostly of the Crossroads gig with Jeff Beck, but there is one thing that really struck me about Tal's participation there, that I have not seen mentioned yet. She was having the time of her life, and her enthusiasm and joy were contagious for both Beck and Colaiuta. There's more to playing in a band setting than just the notes, and she was bringing it. Compare her contribution to the obviously talented and professional bass player Beck toured with a year previously in Japan. I forget his name. She just seemed engaged on a different level, and the band was brought along. At least, from the outside, that's what it looks like.

Tal Wilkenfeld - How does one move up so quickly?

A few years ago I was doing the sensory overload thing at NAMM. While walking through an aisle, heard someone playing bass, not slappin, tappin or soloing, plain and simple groovin and I thought, man this guy has got a special bounce to his groove. The feel was really, really good. So I looked around and couldn't believe what I saw, she was just sittin and playin, nobody really paying much attention or gawking. She looked very young and it was just hard to believe all this groove and bounce was coming out of this young girl. I'm sure there will be people flocking around now and good for her.
She plays bass beautifully and, how bandmates want to hear bass.

Aint taking anything away from anyone, but it is a simple FACT that we, as a species, havent learned to see with our minds and souls yet.
Therefore, the beautiful 'survive' better than the ugly. Racism still exists, etc etc. (and why I'll never be better than a ranked amatuer!)
If the mindset and ethos of Hollyweird CA cracked off the mainland and sunk to the depths of the Pacific, the pheonix of that - we might move ahead as a species to a more fuller intellectual place.
'Til then, it is what it is.
BTW, Tal's got great chops. Call her undeserving, and I'd call you a covetous boob and encourage you to take up guitar instead.
Lets keep the most socially advanced/coolest among us as bassists. We are the vanguard of social development!!

Make no mistake..Tal is very talented.
I do think, however, that if looks play an important role in getting your music out and the band you hire, then the music must not be too special. Just my .02 Obviously it works out in both ways I guess.

I have to say that since my last writing, I bought Tal's CD online, and have been listening to it extensively. In fact, I listened to nothing else for about a week, and I listen to a lot of music. Every single song on that CD is just unbelievable. Part of it is that I really like the drummer (Keith Carlock), and I think he lends an amazing flavor to the disk. However, the bass playing is unbelievable too, and the composition and arrangements are of the highest quality (and I have been playing and studying fusion for 30+ years).
Before making any judgement of Tal, you need to give a really good listen to this CD; it just flat-out rocks!

Tal is very talented and I love, as much as anything else, her enthusiasm for and sheer enjoyment of playing bass.
But is Vinnie hitting it - that is the question now?
i noticed that they share a lot of gigs and i was going to ask the very same thing...
I think that's really out of order, and in very poor taste. Anymore comments along these lines will result in a ban from TalkBass. I don't appreciate you talking about my friend like this.
Regardless of why she is successful (looks, talent, etc..), I can say this;
I bought Transformation because I heard about her on here.
I'm glad I did.

I'll be at BPL both days at the booths, as well as the fender bass situation that's going on at the same time, and I'll be performing at the BPL concert at the key club along with a group of incredible bass players headed by steve Bailey.

It was not my intention to offend anyone, i am italian and i'm sorry i don't completely master the language...
