I've heard him with solid, workmanlike, but unspectacular bassists before (Randy Hope-Taylor and Mo Foster come to mind). Both of them are two of the finest session bassists in the UK, and they played the gig perfectly and didn't grandstand Beck.
A very young Fernando Saunders (with the Jan Hammer Group) was in much the same position as Tal in 1976 and he's done all right for himself
I have a live recording of Stanley with Jeff and it seems a mismatch-2 great players and leaders trying to lead simultaneously. Interesting.....

In each of those cases Jeff had a different sparring partner (Tony Hymas, Jan Hammer, and interestingly enough Jennifer Batten) that was his primary foil and the bass was just doing what a bass does most of the time and taking care of business. Interestingly, Phil Chen and Wilbur Bascomb, the bassists on Wired and Blow by Blow come more from the session world and out of the Motown tradition and less from Jazz/Fusion.
I guess the best chemistry with a bassist as the sparring partner was the old Beck, Bogert and Appice, but that was a volatile mixture that didn't last long.

That may be a generational thing-as in one of my earlier posts one of the sad things about the Music Business today is that there is no Music Farm Team system and no way to apprentice-really talented players are going from the woodshed to Youtube to really visible gigs and Music Press with no seasoning.
Billy Sheehan played 3,000 gigs with Talas before anyone knew who he was. I learned how to play recording sessions on countless bad Custom Albums and songwriter demos before everyone put Pro Tools in their homes and went DIY. Younger players just don't have that opportunity.
Actually, Tal, Hadrian, Damian, Matt, and countless other fine young talents are in their apprenticeships right now-it just wasn't such a public process 30 years ago.

Rhonda has the JB gig? Wow, good for her. For those who don't know, Rhonda did some fantastic jazz fusion stuff with a band called The Merlin Factor before she got the gig with Prince. I can see her fitting the bill very well. Does make me wonder whether JB is on a female bassist kick right now though...

It sounds like Jeff Beck is planning on getting funky.
I very glad for her. Rhonda has been working her butt off for years. Think she will make a good compliment to Jeff. She has a ton of soul and funk going on as well as the fusion thing.
