Tal Wilkenfeld Redux...her CD

One's artisitic vision shouldn't morph into someone elses artistic vision if in fact it's their vision.

On the contrary I don't think Esperanza is over-hyped at all.

Roy, the sliced bread comment is about the CD. :D

Mine was too...It's a good mature work....but you can't compare it to those Icons. They are at a different level than two fine young talents still learning their craft.
I don't think either of them are overhyped. I wouldn't mention Tal in the same leagues as Jeff Berlin, Anthony Jackson, Marcus Miller or Victor Wooten any more than I would mention Esperanza in the same leagues as Stanley Clarke, Michael Moore, Eddie Gomez, John Pattitucci or Christian McBride. There's a level of maturity that only comes from experience. That's the difference, IMHO.
In the meantime, as we say in Nashville, "them's a coupla talented young'uns!" ;)
Totally OT, but that's a sweet Real Book site you have :D

I remember John Entwistle making a statement about a young band that was pretty big but not actually "fully baked" yet as musicians. He said something like....I used to play like that, but wasn't famous yet. LOL Good ole John.

So the easiest way to make a small fortune as a musician is to start off with a large fortune? :D
roy's story in reply to you was hilarious, but it's also true from what i can see. take a look at the backgrounds of pretty much everyone on the charts and you'll find money in their background. like the strokes...a godawful band if there ever was one, but their singer's father is the head of the casablancas modeling agency so they were made into stars way before they should have been. rare is the act that hits it these days without a rich benefactor. even my second favorite band of all time, ac/dc, presents this image of working class stiffs from australia, but their older brother was one of the easybeats in the 60's and had just come off a huge hit single that he wrote called "love is in the air."

I've read a lot about Tal lately, and there is much I have avoided, but to my knowledge, no one has mentioned the most obvious aspect to her success. Her personality.

She is probably very easy to get along with. Or at least, gets along very well with those she plays with.

Think back to the people you have played with. Remember all the a**holes, social miscreants, and total numbnuts, who were great players. All of my successful musical endeavors have revolved first and foremost around people I like to hang out with. People who understand my musicality.

I would guess there are dozens of bassists who Mr. Beck would consider to be "better" players than Tal, but they agree to play together because they LIKE EACH OTHER. Watching them on DVD, it is plain to see that this is the case.

So don't forget kids, practice your scales, and work on being a good person too, couldn't hurt.

+1000 Some folks like here work, some don't. Some think if she were a "guy" with the same skills no one would know who Tal Wilkenfeld was. The point is after way too many posts on the subject who really cares??? :ninja:

+10,000 Regular TB'ers all have an opinion one way or the other. This has become as tired as the old production versus boutique bass threads.:ninja:

this is so true! i know lots of guys that blow me away and yet i get gigs because i'm a way nicer guy than they are. you can't always tell it from my posts, but i am. see my charming smile? :D

of course, that doesn't mean you have to take anyone's crap silently, but you do have to be a decent person to hang out with.

+1 - there's a hell of a lot more to being a working musician than being a great player.

Well only from seeing the many videos of her with JB I can see that she seems really, really happy to be up there playing with him. She looks like she's having a blast and you can even see it in JB's expressions too. It's like he's having a good time too. Probably a breath of fresh air for him that adds enthusiasim and rubs off on the rest of the band.

The initial post of this thread was ONLY about the Transformation CD-not all the other stuff. Sort of like talking about Palmystery instead of:
"Victor Wooten-all he does is double thumb and spin his bass. I know, I've seen it on Youtube...."<please, you must know I'm kidding here>
:ninja:;)

The Tal topic has been discussed from every angle you can imagine. It's DONE... thats the ultimate point.
