Tal Wilkenfeld, who's like her?

To the OP, though I haven't read a single post in this thread other than the first 3, TL;DR, Pino Paladino reminds me a lot of what she does. Listening to John Mayer's "Assassin" kind of reminds me of what she does with Jeff Beck. Her style sticks out a little more than Pino's but as far as groove and their place in the pocket, they're similar. IMO, YMMV.

Wow, dude, that's harsh.. why the nasty slam on Rhonda?
And as far as believing what I said.. that's why I wrote it. "lol", as you say.

None of this is "Hater" talk (itself an intellectually weak, hamfisted, overused meme), strictly just post Labor Day weekend TB badinage, so don't be gettin' your blood up if I say what I think. Mutual respect all around.

With that, are you surely so certain that some little T&A "tighty-tops sans brassiere" factor wasn't at all thought into the marketing package? I'm NOT talking "playing chops" here, I'm talking strictly PR buzz. You've been around long enough to have seen that "the legendary upper horn" is what half the TBers on Tal threads mention!! (some in sorta-code, some directly) And of course it's not a BAD thing. But let's not be so NPR-PC that we have to pretend that the "bra-less mammary in the tighty-top draped o'er the portside bow" is strictly ergonomics!

Is Tal a good player? Sure! Does she sound like a lot of other good players? I'm hearing big chunks of current guys, in a way that a talented Berklee 3rd-year cat or kitten might put together.. she's got good chops, she's totally competent, can certainly hold her own. That's all a given. She took an excellent solo on Jeff's live "Cause We Ended as Lovers" (that's the one that got people talking), in my opinion her best thing in her whole career. Some other work just hasn't been nearly as interesting. I personally don't hear an original voice, I honestly can say, which more addresses the OP's inquiry... I hear some phrase-closing note choices from '80s-era Pattitucci, some patterns moving upward-chromatically in a way that Marcus has done, some harmonics chords out of Jaco's book, etc, all within her own mixture of these and other influences. I don't hear a startlingly "Original Voice", BUT the amalgam is good and competent.

And if Tal Wilkenfeld looked exactly like Rosie O'Donnell, I wonder if... well, never mind.

Now, I gotta go call Salman Rushdie for some survival tips.
"El Oh El".

One of the best defended positions about Tal Wilkenfeld, or any player, that I've ever read on this forum.

It's the position that's being defended, not Tal. ;)

Ok gotcha. Was just not that clear when I read the reply I guess. I have to respectfully disagree about the boob comment and related comments though. I believe she is an extremely talented bassist and deserves some respect. I just don't like some of the comments on here that I have read. Just feel they are a bit rude and disrespectful to her and her talent. Of course that is my thoughts, lol.

Ok let's get back to the question posed at the beginning of this thread: if a person likes Tal, who else might they also like?

How did this get so off topic? Why are we talking about her boobs and perceived talent?

That wasn't the question.

Joe Vegas' post above lucidly analyzed who she sounds like; that was what I liked about it.

I didn't see a lot of boob talk in his post. He suggested that Tal is aware of her sexuality and uses it as part of her brand, which has to be accurate. She would be silly to do otherwise.

Because other people, instead of answering the OP's question were instead making comments that she only got where she was because she was:
1) a girl, 2) her dad paid for her to go to a good school there for that was the only reason she is where she is, 3) the boob comments, she wears her bass the way she does to show off her boob to get the gigs ( how stupid does that sound?) I mean instead of talking about her talent and answering the OP's question they try to act as if she not that great. Well I disagree!!!

I just feel that it is rude to make statements like that and quite frankley sounding a bit sexiest. I am not one to play the race card or sexism card but she is not hear to defend her self and as an admirer of her music I felt like sticking up for her. So what is wrong with that?? As long as people keep ripping on her I will defend her!! I mean how many young bassist have archived what she has? You don't get there by being mediocre. I just get tired of people bashing other musicians. I don't know why we can't just respect everyone's talent.

As far as who to compare her to I am not sure on that. To me she has her own style.

Jimmy M, that is a great assessment. Agreed.

bassguitarhund, you really should read all the comments in detail, as WJGeer has done, before leaping to conclusions about "people attacking Tal"®.

Throughout this thread, there's virtually zero attack. Everyone cites her abilities as a very good player and no one in the posts faults her at all for getting great gigs. That would just be crazy bitter and illogical as a premise. But not everyone "worships" her on this thread, myself included, nor should they be obligated to. You seem to feel we all must tow the party line or be labeled "Haters" or some such... and that just ain't gonna happen.

again- is Tal a really good player? certainly. all others, particularly the non-acolytes like myself, have said as much.

now... i direct the jury to Munjibunga's post, number 4 on page 1 of the thread,
and to Exemonium's response, number 6 on page 1 of the thread.

...look at the picture, then read the 2 posts. (hopefully they won't be deleted, so they can be read i context).

what, exactly, are they humorously kinda chuckling about?
... and if it's about what we THINK it's about, that's VERY MUCH OK!!!
at least they're acknowledging something that's apparent....
and "That" thing is, also VERY OK!!!!! OBVIOUSLY it's OK.
and referencing a chick's nice, well-organized topside is NOT a slam on her as a woman, OR as a musician. try to see the distinction....
BUT for frigs sakes, let's all not pretend it's not there, and that men are not supposed to respond to it. c'mon guys... we're all adults here.

hund, you should consider your argument against people being rude or "sexiest", as you say directly above (it's "sexist" actually, unless you were quantifying), and read this thread. there are no nasty, disrespectful attacks on here (with the exception of some poster who labeled all guys who make comments about Tal's physique "idiot dudes").

She's really good, totally pro, and not groundbreaking, either as a bassist or a composer. that's my opinion. hopefully it can be respected.

I don't know about groundbreaking, but I do think she's different in some ways. Unlike some other players, she seems to be able to just play a song or solo without jamming to much in. I don't get a sense of ego when listening to her play. As to her talent level, I'm not qualified to judge that. And really, I don't care. As to her looks, she should use them more. It would help her career, so why not?

Umm I did read the entire thread. Maybe you don't realize how some of the statements made sound or maybe I took it to seriously? Either way
I did get upset and I am not an angry person. I am really laid back about things. So in order to keep my cool I am just going to leave this thread now. No hard feelings still like ya all. Just disagree with a couple of peeps on here and I will leave it at that. ;) After all like everyone else I have the right to my feelings and opinions.

Peace

OK, finally had time to watch Live at Ronnie Scott's. IMO, Tal is carrying herself like any other musician on that stage. She's dressed down in T shirt and jeans and obviously having a great time playing but decidedly she came to play and she's totally acing the gig. I can't believe I waited this long to check this out.
I don't think she's trading on sex appeal, but her very solid musicianship. Back in the Day Peter Frampton was sold as a Sex Object, but I saw him numerous times before Comes Alive and he was a serious, serious guitarist. I think she'd be doing something good regardless of gender or appearance personally.
