i think most ppl like fingerstyle more,and that playing with a pick is frowned upon by many bassists as someting that kids do in 3 note punk band songs.but if you use it in the right situation, playing a bassline with the pick definitely adds alot of attack and such that you wouldnt get playing fingerstyle.I for one used to totally hate playing with a pick and refused to litsen to players that used one.i thought it was something that "real" bass players didnt do.but lately after trying out playing with one it totally changed my viewpoint on the subject.

Chris Squire from Yes has got to be one of the best pick players around (I'm setting up a filter to block all the anti-Yes hate mail right now...) Listen to Heart of the Sunrise to get a good idea of his precision and overall sound.

Chris Squire, definitely. John Paul Jones didn't always use a pick, did he? I mostly saw him playing fingerstyle.

I don't usually use one, but I really like the sound of bass guitar played with a pick. I see it as just another tool. Hey, if you have a bass that doesn't have a real lively sound to it, it's a great way to gain some "life".

But the thread is about talented pick players, not a debate about whether it's a valid technique or not. The many players mentioned above makes the argument against picks (plecti?) futile.

Jeff Clapper,

He's a local cat who plays almost exclusivley with a pick. (He'll occasionally palm the pick to use his fingers) Rather than just using a pick for the sake of using a pick, he plays stuff with it that otherwise would be almost impossible to do with your fingers. (and I'm not just talking about speed) He could take a lot of finger players to school, and even then, they'll have to stay after class to earn extra credit.
