I think the playing was fine, but the vocals were horrible. The playing might have been just a little busy, but in my opinion, it's all that made the song tolerable. The vocals are just awful from beginning to end. I have never heard her before, so maybe she normally sounds good, but that was rough.

I've heard the studio version and it only caught my ear because of the bass line - which sounded great!

Nothing else about this appealed to me - especially the mannered vocals. In fact I am sure I have heard an instrumental version used as background to something on BBCTV - which sounded much better! :)

I dont know, I really liked the music and bass...she stinks as a singer and thats really the only thing I didnt like. I would rather hear a band do this than just dumb down their parts. If they did that then the whole thing would stink! =)

there was so much "self gratification" and wankery on that stage it was the equivalent of musical porno. I think there was way too much "look what I can do" and too little "look what WE can do"... the word "subtle" no where near their vernacular.

Yeah, and the lady got no range.

I think that's the difference in younger and older musicians. Young guys like to play 'a lot' of notes with little balance between instruments. Just 'in yo face' all the time! I got the feeling, in those 2 clips, that they couldn't wait to break away from those soft passages! :hmm:

I went to a Jill Scott concert once and all I heard was a 'wall of sound'! I could barely distinguish between the instruments. Totally un-enjoyable experience! :rollno:

I thought the same thing when I heard it. You can find live clips of Maxwell and Erykah Badu where their bands are playing just as busily, and it sounds great because the vocals are just as dominant and skilled.

I dunno, I just at times don't enjoy when the studio track is very much one thing, and then you get to the live presentation and it's so over the top Vegas style showboating...how about a direct, nuanced, feel laden re-imagining of the original recording, without all the bombast and everything-thrown-in-to-the-point-of-JAZZ HANDS! nonsense. I mean I understand you're a good player. Now prove it by choosing feel over note vomiting.

Wow. I've played this tune a few times now, with singers that sound SO much better that I actually questioned my internet connection while listening to this. :D (Is this the stream, or is she really that out-of-tune?)

My take on the bass, FWIW....I'm not really digging the slap tone (although the fingerstyle stuff sounds great), and I think he's overplaying a bit, BUT...at least it draws attention away from the singing. :) I do dig the drummer, however, and I like the mix. It's nice to hear everything on a youtube vid.

Overall, it's kind of a shame - I like this tune, which isn't something I say too often about modern Pop/R&B stuff.
