I thought the same thing when I heard it. You can find live clips of Maxwell and Erykah Badu where their bands are playing just as busily, and it sounds great because the vocals are just as dominant and skilled.

Not to nitpick, but I'd like to hear those examples. Both of the vocalists you mentioned aren't exactly known for their vocal pyrotechnics, and I NEVER hear their bands #$%^ on the song like this group did. Seen both live.

For me, and to your point, a better example would be Chaka Khan's Band with Andrew Gouche. At times its a little much, but generally it goes with Chaka's over the top vocal prowess.

The song sounds weird cos the singer was doing it a great injustice, kinda like she was flat all the way. This in turn had caused the busy bassist to stick out more but he is goooood! I don't think he is overplaying BTW.

I don't enjoy basslines played that way but I usually avoid the term over playing. It would have bothered me if his timing sucked but he's playing the busy part well. I enjoy a lot more space with the flashes fit in more sparsely.

Nice clip. I believe the bassist is Gerald Albright who's more known as a saxophonist but plays bass as well as anyone. He doubled when he toured with Anita.

That first video mentioned was horrendous... Vocals were lifeless, so the rest of the band sounded way over the top, and they kind of were... What the hell was the guitard doing? Between a poor mix and bad vocals, it was unlistenable. But the second two videos were much much better, but I still don't think her vocals are anything special.

The crystal light commercial was bad too, and that's with all the help a studio can give... What happened to talent?

This clip is much better, both the singing and the playing. Estelle is definitely from the Rhianna school of performance: stay in key, stand still on stage, look really cute in a short dress.

Much better overall mix. I like this bass player much better than the cat in the first clip. I stil don't like the slapped sections. The tune loses the bottom when he does. He's working that Schecter bass though. Vocally, she's way underclassed! Horrible breathing technique and I think she lacks experience. I think the band is leading her as opposed to her leading the band! I don't think she lacks talent but there's way better talent out there that should be given the opportunity!
