...it's actually just one track, the song "Happiness Is Easy". Anyway, in the booklet it says it has an electric bass in it too, played by some Alan Gorrie guy, though. Danny Thompson's stuff in this song is awesome!

And I reckon so is also Paul Webb's on songs like "Give It Up", "Living In Another World", "It's My Life", ...

By the way, they use Talk Talk's "Life's What You Make It" for the Telecom ads here in NZ!

I meant there are several tracks where Paul Webb isn't playing - so he only plays on 4 out of 8 tunes on the album.

Alan Gorrie and Danny Thompson are far better bass players in my opinion - and certainly Alan is a better singer - every heard of the Average White Band?

Swedish!!! Are you joking?

Although their writers come from Scotland, they did actually have band members from around Britain - even Brighton!

Pick up the pieces is one of the funkiest instrumental singles ever - but they had quite a few albums that did well in the US and UK charts - I'm very surprised that people here, haven't heard of them!

Their members included Steve Ferrone as drummer, who now plays with top session guys like Nathan East etc.

Alan Gorrie fronts his own Jazz/Soul band in the UK.

Steve Ferrone...yes, I remember him being in Eric Clapton's band (together with Nathan East).

I downloaded Talk talk's "today"- another notable fretless bassline.

a definite Mick Karn influence there- eg. Japan's "sons of pioneers".

I have just returned from Glastonbury where I was fortunate enough to catch Beth Gibbons' mesmerising set on Sunday evening. Paul (who uses the Rustin Man pseudonym with Gibbons) did'nt play any bass but acoustic and electric guitar (fairly minimally) and accordian. The gig was sensational. Beth Gibbons imho is one of the UK's greatest singers ever. I have been a long term supporter of (later period) Talk Talk for some time so I am really glad to see Paul (and drummer Lee Harris) involved in something really special.

I saw the video on MTV - it sounds like a strange choice for No Doubt - but the video is a big movie-production job - maybe they had this in mind from the start - Gwen Stefani as serial killer? She's obviously trying for an acting career!

China Crisis is a wonderful synth-pop band with great fretless playing too. Check out their first two albums 'Difficult Shapes and Passive Rhythms' and 'Working with Fire and Steel.'

BBC6music recently played an 80's live set from China Crisis-

some nice fretless lines there- eg. "hanna hanna".

I've been downloading a few tracks- the typical 80's production- the handclaps in reverb at the back of the mix, and other drum machine sounds- eg. later Comsat Angels, Flock of Seagulls......

Paul Webb, a great melodic player in a great band.
Many of us in Canada know this, and were influenced by Talk Talk.
Great videos too, directed by Tim Pope.
Nice to see mentions of all the great bass on Kate Bush albums as well!!!

the piano bass on "Life's What You Make" - this is a great riff and had me obsessed for ages, but there is no bass guitar on the track at all!

there is a fretless bassline on the extended (7 minute) version though.
