I measured mine out very carefully, but to put it where I liked, I had to rout out under it.

I recently purchased the Squier VM Precision TB and the pickup was hotter than my Godin w/active EMGs! I lowered the pickup and levelled off the visible polepieces and it is about the same as the Godin now for output (maybe a bit hotter). I just read that some players in the 70s removed the hidden polepieces altogether to clear up the sound a bit..has anyone tried this?

Well that sums it up pretty good. The leather pick guard was really cool. A high school buddy of mine was into woodwork and carving, most likley, it was done while under the influence of some "shrooms". Played that bass all through the 70's pretty much everything from Iron Butterfly to Freddie Fender.

Heck, that bass could play Wasted Days and Wasted Nights by itself !!

Traded that bass some years ago for a 62RI P

thank you for the tips. I was very impressed when I played the Squir VM TB, but knowing that I can mod it makes it even more tempting. A couple of questions, if I might be so bold as to ask.

1. Would a 2nd "mudbucker" work closer to the bridge? I realize the string spacing would be off just a bit, but wasn't sure how much of a difference that would make

2. If I did add a 2nd pickup, would I need 2 separate on/on/on switches or could I wire it into 1 switch?

thanks again...I am a 5 string bassist, but this is a 4 string bass that I would make an exception for :)

No bother dude, glad to be of service.

1, Its been done by TBers to great effect, search for the "Lotto Bass" to see a stupidly expensive Fender Custom Shop version.

2, you would need seperate switches to do the three way option, but if you just wanted a single coil/series setup, you could do both pickups in the one switch.
I'd prefer the two switches, for far greater versatility.

Sheepdog,

You might want to consider a no hum Jazz PU with a strat style selector switch between the pickups. Check out a Tony Franklin Fender PJ for the set up. My Mudbucker and I went to college just outside of B'ham at the University of Montevallo.

I am also considering 2 push/pull series/parallel switches on each volume. No additional holes unless I decide to have a passive tone control.

Thank you for the advice. I will definitely check out that other bass.

THAT IS IT! I love the look of that bass. Seafoam, white, or LPB w/tort. Only thing I would change is I would love to see it on a tele thinline body. That makes this project even more tempting.
