TapeWound Club~Anyone?

I've been intrigued by the Pyramid 648 black nylons for quite some time, since @beate_r reviewed them (IIRC in this very thread), and am definitely going to try them in the future. What bass do you have them on? Did it sport another tapewound set right before the swap?
The Pyramid tapes are currently on an old Aria P Bass copy with a custom Cavalier A3 Pickup. I’ve run GHS, La Bella copper and D’Addario tapes on this bass recently but haven’t directly A/Bed them against the Pyramids.

Just put the D’Addario Tapes back on my Fretless Jazz. I had had TIJFs on since January.

We’ll see how it goes. The TIJFs and the D’Addario Tapes are two of my favorite strings of all time so it’s good either way! I’m getting the itch to try rounds again, though... I’m thinking the Tapes might help meet the high-end need for a little while.

I have D'Addario tapes on my MIM Jazz Bass. So far, I like them as they have a nice complexity about them. I also use them one an Ovation piezo bass. There they really shine - just the perfect tone for that type of bass.

I once tried LaBella white tapes on an MIJ Jazz Bass. I liked them, although the bass itself had some issues (weak pickup response), so I couldn't judge them adequately. They sounded a bit uneven from string to string and they almost sounded like bright roundwounds. That said, I would love to try them again on a more suitable bass.

Hey Guys,

Glad I found this club. I play a 5 string Ken Smith bass (34 scale) tuned low E to high C.

What options are available to me for a high C string set? (I.e. Am I forced to buy a Labella 6 string set and chuck the B or D'Addario has a 4 string set and I think you can get a single .35 string but I think it is long gauge only. )

Not sure....any help is appreciated. Cheers.

Per FretNation prices, it's cheaper getting D'Addario Nylon Tapewound 4 string set and a .035 single ($37.99 + $8.91 = $46.9) than La Bella Copper White Nylon Tapewound 6 string set ($54.95). Currently FN isn't carrying La Bella Black Nylon Tapewound 6 string set, so it may not be a fair comparison.

New convert here. Ordered a set for a PJ build. I could never get the feel I wanted out of this bass. Now it’s become my main player.

I went with the Labella Whites.
I like because 1) they aren’t black. 2) they have a brighter tone than the black ones.

the biggest adjustment is string tension. It is very light. Very light. I had to add relief to to truss rod, which id think has to be healthier on the long term condition of neck.

So, you get incredibly smooth feel, with virtually no string noise when sliding. Very similar to a flat wound in terms of tone, although I can still slap with these.

With a couple of bouts with CT these are phenomenal. Just played a two hour show and could have gone two more hours.

I’m going to try them on my Player Jazz and see if I like results on this as well.

I fitted a set of D'Addario black nylon tapewounds to my 5-string fretless less than three weeks ago and the wrap has failed on three strings already. I play for just a couple of hours a day and I use my bare fingers. Based upon this experienceI can truthfully say that my VERY expensive D'Addario ETB92-5 set sounded and played great for two weeks and thereafter are total , unplayable , crap.

Where did they fail? Any photos?

Maybe you got a defective set. Did you request a replacement?

1st and 3rd at the 9th ' fret ', 5th at the tenth ' fret '. 3rd went first, feeling like a frayed wrap on a roundwound. I'd need a macro lens to show a pic. Yes, a defective set - or maybe a fake set. They're expensive enough to make knock-offs worthwhile, I guess. I don't recall who I bought them from. They've been sitting in my bag for a year waiting until I felt the need to change my flatwounds.

Hello, I see your in England - where did you buy the defective strings from?

I’ve got a spare set of D'Addario tapewounds - maybe I should open them.
It would have been one of the UK online string sellers. I've used two or three so I can't be specific. My failed set was great to start with . The wrap has failed on the top of the strings, so it's plainly finger-wear- totally unacceptable.

Yes, you must have unfortunately got a defective set.

I’ve contacted D’Addario once before about custom strings - they responded very quickly. I hope it gets sorted.

I better get back to enjoying luxury of Tier 1 lockdown.

Yes- good luck with that. Stay safe.
Did you know that these strings are on sale in the UK for £72.00 a set ? That's certainly knock-off price- $94.00 US. US prices are half of that.
