Tapewounds

I have the same setup as the OP, a passive J with Fender 9120 black nylon tapewounds. Ive used them a decade ago on the same bass, and went on to rounds and a more rock sound. I rediscovered how much i liked that bass with those strings both tonally and physically. There is some EQ work I do on the amp to replace a little low mid loss (perceived), but I rekon that's just a taste thing.

I just found an old set of Fender tape wounds from the mid 80’s.
Having juts discovered the U bass, I want to get up-righty with a regular scale.

Should I put the tapes on:
Dan Electro Rumor bass (hollow inside with a P pup)
A regular P
or a J bass

Has anyone noticed their tapewounds mellowing with use? I love the D'Addarios, but I wish the G string were a little darker and less zingy.
You might want to try the new LaBella gold tapewounds...very expressive. I'll probably be buying them exclusively from now on. Which reminds me that I have to check bassstrings.com and see if they'll work on my new Dean Exotica acoustic bass...not sure about the tension compared to the D'Addario tapewounds, which I used on my old Exotica.

I tried tapes many years ago and didn't like them at all, but I played a fretless Carvin AC50 that was strung with them more recently and I have to admit they felt and sounded pretty great. Anybody know who makes the Carvin tapes? I might persuade myself to re-investigate the tapes arena.

Carvin has a deal with LaBella and that is where I buy my tapes. Just ordered 2 sets from them

IMO; The Danelectro. I had flats on a Danelectro DC Pro a while ago (it's since been disassembled for customization), and, to my ear, it was pretty darn "upright-y". Nothing electric that hangs from you shoulder is going to duplicate an upright, of course, but I think the Danelectro will be in the ballpark - especially with the right playing technique. I do have Roto 88 tapes on a Rogue VB-100; aside from turning the little thing into a tooth-rattling monster, it can be pretty upright-ish, too... but my technique need some improvement.:)

I would go with the P, because they will probably be the old nylon sleeve instead of the nylon tape, and will be a little thumpy.
