Tapewounds

Labe
I tried tapes many years ago and didn't like them at all, but I played a fretless Carvin AC50 that was strung with them more recently and I have to admit they felt and sounded pretty great. Anybody know who makes the Carvin tapes? I might persuade myself to re-investigate the tapes arena.
LaBella, supplies all Carvin packaged strings

How about those Roto 88´s,

If the E string (.115) fits a standard nut, I would like to try them. I dont like to file a nut on a perfectly playable bass

Your experiences with 88? Pros and cons and so on.

Like I said, I have them on an older, Korean Rogue VB-100 violin bass. I like them on that bass very much, and have had no problems with them at all. I have to say, though, that it doesn't sound like the bass in the video; but it's comparing apples and oranges. The Rogue sounds very, very deep and bassy - and teeth-rattlingly loud. Sort of like a Hofner with Pyramid flats - on waayy too many steroids.

You might or might not have to open up one or more slots in your nut; depends on the individual bass. If you do, though, it won't be anything drastic. Anyone who knows what they're doing, should be able to open them up enough for the Rotos, but not ruin the nut for narrower strings. I did have to open mine up; but it's just a cheap plastic nut, held on by a tiny dab of glue. And, "normal" strings were a tight squeeze on that nut, anyway. I'm thinking a Mammoth Ivory nut, for next year...:)

Just put a set of tapes on my Ibanez Portamento, and am extremely pleased with the results. Using the piezo pickup by itself gives a nice warm fat tone. Adding some neck pickup brings extra depth.

D'Addario mediums.

I never once found a set of tapewounds I liked until recently. And those turned out to be LaBella Copper Whites.

They struck me as a little bright and clicky when I first put them on. But their tone softened up after a few hours. And now that they're been on for a while I really like them. A lot.

Big round woody mellow sound - but with enough clarity and definition to avoid the usual dull muddy sound a tapewound can sometimes have - plus some smooth and very complex mids that sweeten it up very nicely. Perfect for Motown, jazz, classic rock, or blues.

Great strings IMO. I'd definitely buy them again.
