Would it be good enough to just go straight for the ammonia rather than the Windex with ammonia?

Acids vs bases--not basses. I don't see why not. If you want to develop techniques you need to try things incrementally, applying some basic sense. It's taking some relatively low-stakes chances experimenting.

Yes, household cleaning ammonia will work fine. You don't need much, just a capful in a closed container with the hardware should be enough.

Before doing the fuming I would wipe the parts down with acetone to remove any grease or fingerprints that might resist the fumes and leave marks on the finished article.

Nickel plating will naturally dull down before too long. This will also be the best looking process. The shiny tuners are something you’ll get used to…and then they’ll get dull.
