Yeah, I can't wait to get more ink. I found a killer artist, I just have to find the money and time to get some more done. The only thing is that the guy that I go to has only been tattooing for four years, so he is still learning some techniques to do the more detailed stuff, so that is making me a little apprehensive about going back to him. Great guy and artist though.

i've only had two artists touch me. both buddies, The guy that did most my work, my sleeve and back, did all my brothers stuff, minus the new piece he got to start his sleeve while he was back on leave from iraq, but that artist actually joined the army. i got a piercer friend of mine, who's kinda like a tattoo apprentice as well as a piercer, did a dragon coming from a lotus on the outside of my calf, well, a little in the front to a little of the back of my calf, and he's gonna do a samurai on the inside of my calf soon, so all my work is pretty cheap, granted, its not paul booth or whoever quality work, its still great work in my opinion, but most my tattoos don't have any meaning behind them anyways, so to me having friends do them makes them all the more "valuable" if you will, to me.

but yeah, i see where you're coming from with him not being super experienced with certain techniques, but i mean, he's gotta learn somehow you know, and if he's beeing doing it for 4 years, he's probably pretty good at what he does, so even if he makes a minor mistake i'm sure he can fix it.

Yeah, I am not too worried about him making a mistake. But I am hooked on Miami Ink and I love Chris Garver's work and how good he is. Maybe I should stop comparing to one of the best tattoo artists on the planet.

yeah, those guys are good. i watch that show whenever i can, but a part of me hates it. i'm not a tattoo artist or anything, but that show is so unrealistic, it doesn't show how most tattoo shops really are. people don't come in wanting custom work, and artists don't just draw up a custom backpiece or sleeve or something in 30 minutes or an hour, at least none of the shops in my town do that. and alot of my buddies are tattoo artists and piercers right, so i hang around tattoo shops alot, and i see people come in thinking that's how it really is, and i can't help but laugh a little and get a little annoyed, because you know the tattooers are annoyed at that. just because that's not how most shops operate.

i think you should get the guy you have now to do it, like i said, there's only one way he's going to get better and that's by tattooing. and to me to be a part of his learning and growing as an artist would be more pleasing and gratifying in the end than paying out the wazzoo for someone that's on tv to do it...but that's just me.

A friend of mine recently opened up a shop where he wants to do nothing but custom work. There is no flash hanging in his shop anywhere. He did my latest piece about three weeks ago. Of course, we'll see what the market decides. Perhaps he'll do well being all custom (he also does a lot of airbrush work too); perhaps he'll have to rethink his business strategy. He's a very talented artist, regardless.

The guy that I go to loves to draw up custom stuff, same with the shop where I get my piercings. Most tattoo artists that I have met love doing custom stuff, it just takes a lot longer for them to draw up the tattoos than what they show. Usually at least a week. How do the shops opperate where you hang out?

I am not going to actually go to miami to get a tattoo, but if Chris Garver was ever touring near me I would want to get something done by him. He is just that good, but by the time that happens I will probably have changed my mind.

yeah, hopefully it'll work out well for him. i think in general people like custom work more, but time constraints and cost will be the deciding factor in whether he has to change how his business operates. i'm no tattoo artist, hopefully one day a piercer (since i can't draw worth a damn) but i pretty much loiter at the tattoo shop my friends work at when i'm off work, and that's one thing i've noticed. i've seen people come in wanting a certain idea, and once they're told it'll take a few days to draw up, they decide they want some flash, just because they want something right then and there. so hopefully it'll work out for him, because that'd be awesome just doing nothing but custom work, but it all depends on the market wherever he lives i guess.

yeah, that whole first paragraph basically describes all the shops down here. all my buddies love custom work, but they take at least 2-4 days (usually more like a week) to draw something up. i've actually been talking to a few of them about miami ink and LA ink (which i havn't actually gotten a chance to watch yet) but most of them get pissed off at the shows just because the stuff they have to deal with DUE to the shows (aka people expecting way to much in too little time, etc etc) and they just wish it was more like a real shop operated.

and yeah, i get what you're saying about him. i've seen a few artists i'd love to tattoo me (most of there names i've forgotten actually, haha) but i wouldn't travel AND pay all that money for them to do it, lol. but who knows, i think alot of the big names in tattooing are going to start travelling alot, and not only in conventions and stuff, but maybe even to shops and stuff.

The guy that I go to wont do walk-ins. Last time I checked, he was booked solid for two months, all custom work. His apprentice will actually draw a lot of the stuff up and he will modify it to make it work or look better. Once his apprentice starts tattooing, I am going to volunteer to let him do one on me. He only does a few tattoos a day, maybe four at most and that is only if they are smaller. The shop has only been open since August, but has really gotten peoples attention.
