It shouldn't have taken as long as it did. I went to 1 hardware store, 2 Lowe's, Home Depot, & Walmart before finally buying it at the 2nd Lowe's.
I just use my knuckles. They're handy.
I tried that before going out looking for a stud sensor. I'm not sure if it's my hearing or what, but I can't seem to do it by ear. I also can't tune a guitar or bass by ear.

Good luck with the stud sensor. I hope it works better than mine. Well, I have a magnet that works well, but the other kind bamboozle me. Mine says there's stud every ten inches, and then not again for three feet.
I just ran it across the 3 spots I intend on installing the hangers tomorrow & the studs couldn't be in a better position.
I realized I didn't really need it for one spot, because I could clearly see the nail hole just above where I want to put the hanger, LOL!

George could open doors, knew when it was time for me to go to work and would get me up if my alarm did not go off, knew when it was the weekend, played fetch..amazing cat I miss him.

I can't use those things. Every time I use one, it just beeps nonstop. Oddly enough, it stops when I put it down.
That damn thing was useless at one spot. I put a nail into the wall thinking I would feel the meat of wood, but nothing.
I finally found a spot to screw to the old fashioned way, I put holes in the wall on the other side (it's a closet), until I found some meat.

You can't see the bass......but actually it's a Funk song and he's learning slap...
The newer ones work on some kind of doppler (radar) to gauge the depth of what's behind the wall. You have to calibrate them first, by holding them over a spot you don't think there's a stud & hold the button down.
Then you keep holding the button & move it across the wall until it beeps.
If you calibrate it directly over a stud, you have to try a different spot.
When the stud finder shows there's a stud.....mark the location with a pencil and then hit the spot with a ball-peen hammer....
If the hammer goes right through the drywall....there's no stud there....
