Double Bass TB/DB Sampler #2: Initial Feelers? Interested?

DEAD PUKESPRAY, ya cain´t be serious. I snail mailed the cd on monday, so if it´s arrived already that´s incredibly fast...
I expected it to travel about 2 weeks or so...well there´s
no need to send email anymore, we can go back to writing LETTERS, goddammit.

Anyhow, Ed:
since the cd is already on that side of the puddle,
you can copy whatever you want out of it, and send to Sam,
Durrl or whoever puts that compilation together.

Expanding on that point (Lawyer Hat On): The reason that this is so is that the TB/DB Sampler was a non-commercial, educational enterprise. People took time to provide highly-detailed critiques of my submissions, and I did the same for others. I learned a lot.

The TalkBass Sampler Thor refers to is a commercial endeavor -- it will be offerred as consideration for a business transaction. Even though the transaction benefits TB, and TB is cool and we love TB.

Moving on to participation generally: Thor, I'm sensitive to your point. I could truthfully say that I don't have anything I want to release in any forum right now. But beyond that, I'm concerned that my music would be surrounded by thundering Peaveys and would only serve the function of, "Kewell, c43k i7 0u7, dud!" It's not so much jazz snobbishness as anti-rockitude.

But I am open to what you have to say.

I find it odd that I am supposed to know about the sampler for "all of TB" that is apparently only posted about on the BG side? I don't frequent the BG side, therefore it is not the center of my world, and its not so much snobbery as the fact I had no idea about it anyway. I personally find it sad that such a heavily trafficked forum can't find some trax, and I don't know why this is the fault of everyone down here for some reason?

Anyway, all I am saying is I don't think the 'tude is deserved. I will check out the threads up there...

Paul had the announcement prominently displayed
on the headers which appear in both forums
header on top from time to time.

Those headers were replaced when the site was
hacked this week. Now they are gone temporarily.
Unless I am mistaken announcement headers are
common to the whole site.

It is now only in Paul's Shack. FTP upload access
is temporarily suspended while Paul recovers server
functions lost.

Chris, I understand your position here. Let me expand
a bit on mine, as my time was short last night.
I recognize, as Sam stated so well, that the DB project
is akin to recording a tape of your technique of a well
known standard, and comparing notes on interpretation
for your personal edification. And I have absolutely no objection to this at all.

I have researched the mechanical license, it appears to
work out to $52.50 per song. Ouch.

That being said, I would ask you to consider if there is
original work available in your collective repertoire, that
might be contributed to help benefit the site, please
consider such a contribution. Yes, it is a commercial
project designed to generate cash to run the board.
Paul has noted that supporting memberships are in a
decline, and this is one way he could be helped.

Also, contributions from you help underscore that playing
bass is more than 'going to eleven'. I, for one, listen to
3 or four hours of jazz on WGBH in Boston nightly. I admit
that I have neither the desire nor interest to pursue
jazz in my playing. Nor am I interested in learning
Rachmaninoff on the piano, but I always enjoy listening
to people working in their chosen niches. Exposure to
different styles of music, IMO, is key to one's personal
development as a musician. Contributing some material
may help expose some people to DB, who might not
otherwise take the opportunity to listen.

So continue with your own project as you see fit, but
consider that if you are able to contribute original work
to the TB project, it benefits the TB community in many
ways, not the least of which is expanding the horizons
of young and impressionable bassists of all ilks.

If I can motivate you to participate, that would be
a good thing.

I've chuckled more than a few times over that statement.

All I can say is, if that is your preference, so be it.

I for one, would certainly like to hear stuff from all of
you, so if I can't get you to submit material, at least
perhaps I could hear some of your material in another
type of release, if only for my personal edification.

My transparently ulterior motive is to learn to play
by listening.

Sure smells funny down here, sure nothing is burning ... ?

Dude, uhhhh, there's been, like this uhhhhh, whole like THREAD that was like TOTALLY stickied at the top of like the whole RECORDINGS forum in DB that is uhhh, totally called like TB/DB Sampler. Check it out.

This could, in fact, be serendipity at work. I just did a few little revision things this morning and have been working with Sam regarding an announcement post in the sticky thread up top. I went ahead and made the revised site live, thinking that the announcement would come out later in the day, once Sam is done his busy day at servin' up law and I'll already be out on my early evening gig.

I didn't think anybody would go and link to the site today in a hot thread!
