Well, this was supposed to be a noise compilation, so I didn't approach it like I would a normal song. When I think of noise, I think of unstructured. A good example would be the last 3 minutes of "The Widow" by Mars Volta (or minutes 5 through 9 of "Cicatrix ESP" for that matter :D)

EDIT: Or minutes 11 through 17 of Pink Floyd's "Echoes"

Ideally, one would approach it with ears open, eyes closed, and a quality pair of headphones.

It is entirely possible you just don't enjoy noise music. In fact, its probably the case. :p
That said, if you want "structured song kind of thing, beats, bass and tones" then the middle of the album is probably more to your taste (specifically the tracks from Poor Tom, Mr. Pickles, and PassinWind).

Oh, and since we're listing our reference points for noise, mine tend to be somewhere between Sonic Youth, Boris, and Merzbow. Compositionally, I had an idea of what kind of feeling I wanted to get, and I flipped on the 8-track. One take and no overdubs later, and I was happy with it.

The challenge is going to be coming up with something new for volume 2 without falling back on the same tricks.

Exactly, except I think Merzbow, Haino, etc when it comes to noise. My composition was about layering, not structure. My thinking is that noise should not have any or minimal structure. But that's my take on it.

Nope, but your expectations were arguably not for a noise compilation per se, but some other sort. My cut was originally just the slide bass part, which I recorded with no click track, and I nearly submitted it that way. But I had a feeling that the track would have more contrast to the drone-y ones the way I submitted it.

My usual points of reference would be works by Varese, Stockhausen, Charles Ives, and Frank Zappa. I've done a ton of stuff like that though, and wanted to throw out something different just 'cause I can.;)

Exactly. Noise music when I was introduced to it back in the mid 90's was called noise art by most of the artists I knew. Most of what I was exposed to was the feedback, white and pink noise stuff. No one told me at first that noise was a wide ranging as it was, other wise I might have gone in a totally different direction as a player.

Like Deluge and a few others I went with a performance piece done in one take [I used a ediral pocket recorder] I didn't want to put any thought into it I let what ever was going to happen happen, the fact I ended up with something I thought would work on the first try just happened, all I wanted was something that would make your head kind'a hurt:D from that Low low C string feeding back:D

Funny you should mention taking too much time.

I was a little concerned mine might be a little too musical, but I wanted to ruin some perfectly good percussion and I wanted it to be really full, and a little musical. It all just fell into place and was just dissonant and full of enough anomalies that I figured it would be good. I actually cut the process short and sent it in because I liked what I had and was starting to get overwhelmed with ideas. I thought that continuing to polish might kill some of the good that happened naturally.

I also don't have very good feedback 'tools' so I had to go elsewhere for my noise.:p

I seriously can't get over how interesting I continue to find this. I've never really been into noise as a genre but it is fun to listen to the ambiance created by everyone.

Thanks. The real problem is that I do all my recording direct (no mics, no mic inputs) and it is really hard to get some good feedback out of that. :(There's probably a workaround, but I haven't worked that hard for it yet.

Oscillating fuzzes are about the next best thing to real feedback, then there's where you use a oscillating fuzz and feedback and things get real sick real fast.

I've found that delay + fuzz can do some pretty cool feedbacky things when you play with delay time, repeats and delay feedback (especially if you've got a really sustain-y fuzz and you add some harmonics in there).

Yeah, the definition of "noise" has been problematic for me in the past. I gravitate more towards drone & repetition. Since I took "noise" as "no rules," I went with what came naturally.

I love the range of styles represented here... definitely looking forward to Volume 2!

I'm hoping Vol. 2 will be a double album. The time restriction of 4-5 minutes max works well when everything gets compiled as much as I'd like there to be no restriction of time.

I'm also thinking that a noise covers album would be interesting. Cover one of your favorite sounds but make it sound completely different, perhaps unrecognizable.

I had a vague idea of what I wanted when I started but I too just put the H4 on record and just thought I would see what came out...

my only real structure was knowing I was going to use the PS3 and the Turbo Rat the way I did, everything else was just what felt right...

knowing what other peoples concepts of noise are now is going to make me do more experimenting, not just stick to the noises but also the beats and the funky stuff etc
