TC Electronic BG250 Club (Part 2)

I tried the BG250 12 and 15 at GC yesterday and wasn't crazy about the sound. It wasn't the amp so much as it was the cab. I can understand what other reviews have said about it getting lost in a mix. Kinda boomy and not a lot of definition.
So I've opted to get the BH250 head and have a ordered a Carvin 115MB cab to use with it. The cab is sealed and may work well with this head, we'll see. If it works out I'll order a second cab for a 2X15" stack.

I don't doubt that someone has said it, but I've not experienced or seen getting lost in the mix as a common complaint. Even then, it often has to do with EQ. Boominess and nasal/honky qualities of the 115 cabinet have been brought up, but they can be dialed out (the nasal quality with more effort).

I got a Carvin 115 Ext cabinet and have been using it with my RH750. I've been very pleased with it. I wanted something that replace my use of the BG250-115, and this does it.

Being tweeterless is different, but it sounds great, can easily loud enough for my purposes, and is a really easy carry.

Two of them should really kick and still in a small/compact stack.

I swapped out the 1/4" jack and put black corners on mine...still need to order a black handle at some point.

It took me some time to figure out how to handle my bg250-115 tone. As buying another rig wasn't an option I spent some time to play with the eq.
And to reduce the boominess and add a lot of definition the trick is finally simple : I just reduce a bit the bass and the mids. At first I was only reducing the bass which was letting me with a too thin tone. By reducing the mids by almost the same amount (depending on the room of course), it adds a lot of mids and high mids but not in a honky way.
It works great in my case :)

Morten, combined toneprints are great!

Usually I am not using much other effects than tubedrive and/or comp.
Yet, I think chorus combined with comp and tubedrive combined with flanger/phaser would have some occasional use.

More important for me would be to have 4th band of EQ. I don't know if it's possible with the technology used, but it would be nice to have a EQ toneprints with different central frequencies and Qs. I think the most needed ones are in mid range but for example +/-50hz toneprint would be usefull to go after the Ampeg tone.

I totally agree with you !
Another good idea regarding the mids and the toneprints has also been submited in this thread : transform the toneprint knob in a mid frequency selector and then use the mid knob to increase or decrease that selected frequency.

This is my first post so hello everyone. Being honest I am torn a bit, on http://www.thomann.de/ site difference between BG250-208 and BH250 is around 3 euros. I am guitar player, I'd want to try playing bass and I am not sure if I should save more for 1x12 or 1x15 version or maybe just again, buy stand alone head or 208 version so I'd have DI and portable/practice combo in one package? I can always get additional cabinet later for gigs, there are no downside between BG250-208 and BH250 beside speaker cabinet that isn't easy to remove? I hope this isn't some promotion or
clearance because I still don't have enough money to buy straight away.

Usually the prices drop before the next generation amps are in stores.
I don't think the prices will go up again, as long there is old stock left.

I bought BG250-208 a week ago because the price was so good (299e). It makes no sense to buy new BH250 now because the prices are almost equal. If you later find out you want only the head, you can detach it from the combo. If you need more power, 208 has an extra speaker out. I've played mine with additional 115 and it sounded great.

I haven't tried BG250-115 but I had 112. I returned it because I didn't like the sound of 12" speaker. They are all great, just pick the one that suits your needs.
