TC Electronic BG250 Club

Hi there,

This is my first post here and trust me, I've read all about I've found about the BG250, but finally I have to do the question on 1 million dollars to have a clear idea about my next purchase.

I play with a hard rock band with a HEAVY hitting drummer.

Will this amp have enought volumen to hear my self decently ?

Likely, yes. The difficulty in answering is that "loud" can be different depending on who you're talking to. It can be loud, very loud, really loud, extremely loud, insanely loud or just stupid loud.

IMO, garden variety "loud," defined by keeping up with a harder playing drummer, is easily within reach of the BG250. From my experience, practicing with a too loud drummer and guitarist playing too loud on a Marshall half-stack, it was more than adequate. I've used it for a few gigs and the same goes, but gigs where I've used it were actually more volume controlled than practice.

If you have real concerns and you're talking about something beyond "loud," as in "my drummer doesn't know how to bring it down some," I don't think you should be looking at combos. Go all the way to stupid loud capability and you know that you have no worries.

Like drpepper says loud can mean most anything. It's non-specifc.

Here's my answer. I've used this amp stand alone with a 7 piece blues band with a hard hitting drummer and guitarists playing 50-100w amps and never got it about 5 in a medium sized club.

I also worked gigs in a three piece rock trio with a guitarist play through a 100w Marshall head into a 2x12 cabinet and stand alone again I have no volume problems playing around 5-5.5 on the master with the gain around 7 and it has plenty more to give if I need it.

This is a loud amp for a 250w combo. You'll hear yourself just fine and you can run into the FOH PA whenever you play a big room. Go to the tc electronic site and read their abstract on the Active Power Management system they incorporate into this combo.

You gotta do what you gotta do. If I had bought from MF or some other online vendor, I don't think I would have tried a second one. I probably would have done the return and moved on. The shipping is a hassle.

Not wanting to deal with it is understandable and so is the sentiment of not being able to trust that another one wont do the same thing.

That said, I did get mine replaced, and I'm glad for it. I've grown to trust it enough. And I've come to have some comfort in believing that this particular problem (or strain of problems) is something that happens right out of the gate. Only time will tell on that...

FWIW whenever I get a new amp like this I run it through long burn in cycles to see whether or not it will fail. I had several out of town gigs booked to play right after the amp arrived and no room to haul a backup so I ran it hours on end, left it on over night, and put it through a couple of dozen or more on an off cycles over three of four days and it worked like a charm.

Some may think that's crazy but from my experience if it's gonna fail it will fail going through that and if not you can be pretty damn certain you won't have a problem with it thereafter. YMMV

Thanks guys, it really is a fantastic amp for the money. I'm debating re-buying the amp. Right now they are doubling their return policy to 60 days. Also, if I just re-buy it as opposed to exchanging the amp, I qualify for getting the free chorus pedal too. $340 for the amp plus a free chorus pedal is hard to refuse.

If I do buy another, I'm going to leave it on bunch and try to burn it in. 60 days should be enough time for me to break it in and not have to worry as much about it dying on me.

apparently, this was the cause of the noise that bothered me...

cheap extension cord switch seems to interfere with something inside of the amp! still gotta lot to learn about these new psu technologies... ;)

@Aeko, mine is going up to 12 o'clock on master volume at average rock rehearsal. above is just too loud.

Bozha, a faulty ground connection ?

I'm finally decided with the BG250 and my birthday arrives :)

I will soon go to the store, make a sound test on Saturday morning (best time to test new material, everybody is doing something else), and bring the BG with me.

No, it was from the smoldering lamp in that lousy switch. Avoid that with this amp...

Anyway... I knew it is the right choice when I was in store, a bit above half volume and some small packs start falling from shelves, strings on acoustic guitars starts resonate by itself, whole place starts grooving with me... 8DD Hope you'll like it...

I'll second this. I haven't even had it above 5-5 1/2 at a gig with no sound reinforcement whatsoever. Add the Spectra Comp Tone print and you get a little more volume on top of that and it smooths out any string to string balance issues.

As I've previously posted the abstract on the tc website talks about their Active Power Management System and provides a rationale for why this amp seems to push more volume than others of similar or even greater wattage.

I'm no wizard when it comes to understanding amp technology but they lay it out in a manner that most anyone could easily understand and all I can say is it appears to work well with this amp. It's a loud little beast for it's size.

Damn, now I need to find something wrong with mine so I can get a free chorus pedal too, LOL. :p

Michael I'd say that if it's gonna fail it'll fail in the first 24 to 72 hours of operation. That's why I left it on overnight a couple of times. A few hundred dimes worth of power from Xcel Energy vs getting 800 miles away with no spare was not an enjoyable thought.

Mine came through all of it plus 9 hours of gigs that weekend with flying colors and nary a problem since. If at first you don't succeed.........ya know it's worth it as far as this amp goes. JMHO

This is my first post on here as well and i have read all of this thread. I decided to purchase the BG250 and have loved it so much that i purchased another one in case anything went wrong with the first one. I love it that much!! I have had no issues with either thus far and have had the first one for over a month and have had both on gigs now at a decent volume. I had this crazy idea of what these may sound like stacked and playing together. So i did some research on a good splitter and came up with the "Lehle P-split".

So i got that and laid the one BG250 on it's side and stacked the other on top. I am running both with the Spectracomp. Let me tell ya that in my living room cranking this and playing around with the tone of both amps i have been in heaven. It's truly is amazing at this price point.

I also own both and Eden WT400 and Eden WT550. Two Bag End cabinets 1-15with coax and the 2x10 Deep with coax. So i am familiar with good sound and have been playing for 30 years. Originally just purchased this just to have a decent light weight practice amp. Boy have i been stunned and this amp has far exceded my expectations!! One happy camper over here if they don't fail. Just wanted to chime in

Thanks man! Just did this stacking of these yesterday and it isn't just about having more volume which of course it will do when wanted. BUT just imagine being able to eq both of these amps separately for different cabinet voicings. It's like having a biamped rig....well heck it is....lol. But just started fooling around with that set up yesterday and the results are a total thumbs up. So if ya wanna get a lil crazy.......hehe.....just sayin kidz :)
