TC Electronic RH450, RS210, RS212 Review Thread (Part V)

Shat do you mean by cut through the mix? It's not like the RH450 has a natural sound that is far from a flat tone. Except for the top-end roll-off, I think it's fairly neutral except for a bit of low-mid bump. Did you find yourself wanting more bottom, upper-mid, treble, or what?

This is the part I was struggling with, how to get it to punch a little better without getting too loud on stage. I tried boosting the low mids and it helped some, but it was starting to get to be too much for the vocalists, so I had to turn down the volume, then I couldn't hear myself again. There was plenty of bottom, too much, in fact, so I rolled some of that off. I usually cut the hi-mids some, but ended up leveling them out a bit. What I was lacking that I have been used to is more punch and note definition.

It doesn't help that at this place there's a subwoofer right uner my feet. TONS of bass!! It's nice to feel it, but it doesn't help when I can't really hear the notes. I ended up dragging the rig up so it was pounding me in the back just a few inches away. Better, but not the note-definition I usually get with my DB750/GS410 rig at that gig. I was hoping that the taller TC stack would actually help me hear the notes better so I could turn myself down on stage, but that wasn't the case at all at this particular joint.

I have an outdoor festival gig this Friday and a wedding on Saturday. I'll give it some more tweak-idge at these places.

I suggest that on the next outing, you try the RS450 with your GS410 and see what happens, or try the DB740 with the RS210 stack.

I've done several A/B tests with these different configurations. I always prefer the GS cabs over the TC, but I got the TC cabs so I could fit them in the back seat and trunk of a muscle car. No GS 10 loaded cab is gonna do that! :(

IMO, with the GS cab, the RH450 is almost as good as the DB750 while having a few differing characteristics. They both sound amazing through the punchy, full range, GS410. They both sound just a little flatter (not as dynamic, punchy, defined) through the RS210 cabs, although all of these cabs sound really great, really. It's probably just the difference between a 410 with more internal volume that pushes more air over two vertically stacked and smaller 210's. Just a guess there. :hmm:

Are you setting up on hollow stages? If so, you might want to try a GRAMMA from Auralex. I always use mine when setting up on a hollow stage...

+1 Good advice.

Since it was a known venue, I think it was probably the cab difference that affected the sound most. The RS cabs are great, but not for everyone. Still, I'll second the suggestion to use a GRAMMA with any cab on a wooden stage.

well guys my new RH450 is due to arrive in the mail tomorrow! i'm not one of the more prolific posters on here but i read what you all said about this amp and decided to give it a try. it also helped that one of my friends who is wise in the ways of bass gave me a very convincing review. anyway i'm psyched to finally try it and i'll let you know what i think!

@Kjung (probably usefull for others, so, no pm ;))

I was listening to all your soundclips, and even if that sound great with AE410, etc, i was not totally satisfied with the sound, always the same little thing i don't like with my RH450+rs212 (i really like the RH450 with ebs amplified AC-311, studio monitors, even with pa system, but not always with amp+cab)...until i see "4X8 lds" soundclip : it's exactly the sound that i want with a cab !
Can you tell me if it's the cab property, the set up of the rh, the soundclip/camera, who make the difference ? can you hear what i'm talking about or am i dreaming ?

(if you tell me that the cab sound great, and it's really different than the others, more "hifi"/modern sounding with RH, the problem will be that i live in europe...and lds, its hard to find :()

thanks (and sorry for my poor english, i'm french)

Hello! I actually just took that clip down, since I thought it was a bit too specific (I put it up for the new owner just before shipping).

What you are hearing is the VERY aggressive and high SPL and super upper treble extended Selenium tweeter that LDS has as an option. I try to keep the recorder, volume, player, style of playing, room, bass, strings, etc., etc. relatively constant so the clips are at least somewhat comparable.

The RS210/212 tweeter (coax) is much more organic and mellow. FYI, the top end of the AE410 sits pretty much right in-between the RS210 and that LDS cab you are taking about... brighter in the lower treble/upper mids than the RS210, but not nearly as 'airy and hi fi' way up in the upper treble as the LDS 4x8t.

Hope that helps.....

Edit: Other cabs that have this very pronounced, king of hi fil top end are the Epifani UL line, the SWR Golight cabs, and the GK Neo cabs.

Thanks for your answer (i was looking for the golight too ,)).

but i don't understand one thing, i was pretty sure it was the rh 450 working with the 4X8 on your clip (not the markbass) ?

I now see I did both.... F500 and RH450 (I edited my earlier post to remove the F500 comments). Yes, the RH450 sounded quite a bit brighter than with the RS cabs also. Forgot about that clip! Sounds good! I think I posted the RH450 on Youtube but not the F500... sorry about the confusion.

The GoLight will most likely do the trick for you with the RH450. Similar to this cab, the GoLight 410 has that bit of a hole in the upper mids that kind of allows the tweeter to 'float above the cab' a bit. That results in a very pure, very clean, very crisp tone, since the upper mids are not masking the upper treble response. If that's your thing, the Golight should sound very nice... probably a bit punchier than this very deeply voiced 4 x 8, but similar sparkle up top, even with the RH450!

Whats with the Marshall cans.. Look interesting!

LOL!, we were opening for a regional touring act, and those were the fake Marshall shells on the bass-player's side of the stage. There was a 2x12 (Randall, I think?) for the guitar signal behind one of those, and the bass player was running through a Hartke 4x10 that was behind another one. Here's a full shot of that setup:

Interestingly, our guitar player was actually using more real Marshall 4x12's than the headlining guitar player. :D

I thought for a second that you came across something real rare and vintage weird... Good story.. Thanks!

If you want to give a listen to what that rig sounded like, you can check out this clip. I must say, though, in our lead singer's defense, that the monitors were set up for the main act (a Ted Nugent cover band), and pretty much the only thing coming through the monitors was guitar.

Oh, and if you can't tell by my bass tone, I really do like Steve Harris (though I'm not specifically trying to cop his tone; it just kinda came out that way). :smug: :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :bassist::cool:

FWIW, this recording was made on a Kodak Zi8, using the built-in mic. The camcorder was sitting near the mixing board, but according to the sound guy, a good portion of the bass sound out in the room was from the TC rig. I did use the RH450's DI, which the sound guy loved.

Tom.

well i spent some quality time with my new RH450 last night. my first thought after playing the first few notes was "wow this beats my ampeg at being an ampeg!" i couldn't believe how old fashioned it sounded, especially given it's very modern appearance and feature set. the sound was extremely warm, warmer than almost anything i've played aside from a real SVT. KJung was right, of course, it's very low-middy. i turned the low mid down a few clicks and it sounded better. i really am caught off guard by how much it sounds and reacts like a tube amp. i found that it responded better to more traditional pickup configurations on my warwick $$; 2 single coil (jazz style) was particularly good.

i did have one issue, which was that certain pickup configurations (such as using both humbuckers together) seemed to not work very well. it felt like the amp had trouble handling it...it lost some clarity and seemed to be working too hard. i know this particular bass can sometimes be a handful for amps, but i've gotten this configuration to sound good on far less powerful amps. anyone have any suggestions on this?
