Team Trace Elliot! Part II

Hey guys,

I have an old (late 80's) 4x10 without the tweeter--big red band in the middle. I think it's model 1048. Last night at practice, I noticed some flappy/flubby sounds on the bottom left speaker. Bottom right speaker was replaced about 4 years ago with the last one they had in stock at British Audio. These are the speakers with the LARGE dust caps....can't recall the impedance or model.

Does anyone know where to get another 10" speaker that will work in this cab without me having to take the cab apart to get model #s? I'm not sure what the impedance is, but the previous owner had one with the smaller "trace elliot" logo'd dustcap and it was definitely not the right impedance.

Mine looks a lot like this one here (except mine is more beat up):

Thanks for your help!

Correct on the 1048 being your model number
They do have your direct replacement speakers in stock as of last month at BAS.

Interested in buying the 1028h from my combo? :ninja:

I've played via the 1028 well actually just about all the TE cabs... I prefer the 1048 over 1028 cabs and my AH1200SM would pop the 1028 at half volume anyway. LOL
So I need the higher wattage cabs like the 1088, 1084 or 2 1048h cabs.
The SWR sounds good but I like the sound of Trace Elliot better. Besides the SWR doesn't match the rest of my rig. :D

I purchased the TE V-Type 600 head here on TB that has the bad amp section with the idea of taking the amp out of a Carvin HD1500L that I have.
I allready confirmed that it will physically fit as I have a TE 5001 (300) V-type head, the Carvin board is small and light so It will be interesting to see how it turns out and how much it will weigh after I remove the original transformer and amp.
I will post some pics when I get started.

As far as I know... the amp section is fine in that head, just the toroidal coil is bad.
If you change the amp section it will change the final sound of the amp and may just sound like a Carvin with big ol' TRACE ELLIOT balls!!
LOL .

I'm not going to do any mods that can't be undone as I hate to modify and lower the value but I thought that it would be interesting try.
Like I said I have the TE 300 version and spent some time A/B ing the Carvin 1500 compared to the TE 300 and the Carvin seems to have a little more in the mid department but the trace is more clear but not by alot. One thing I have learned is the little nuances that you hear at bedroom levels can easily get lost in the mix on stage so why stress over a small difference.
I think that you mentioned that the power supply could be as much as $300 and that is more than the Carvin Amp is worth, and I can keep an eye out for a new power supply in the meantime if this doesnt work out.
The shipping shows 50lbs so I can only imagine how much that transformer weighs.I know that my TE 300 doesnt weigh near that much and it is baisically the same with the exception of the Toridal transformer and a minimal addition to the amp and heatsink.

So I recieved the TE 600 today and I was suprised that it was okay after seeing what had happened to the box, looks like it was involved in a Soccer game.
Anyway I opened it up and discovered that in addition to the Toridal transformer being possibly bad 2 of the Mosfet transistors are blown (Mosfets never go quietly) you can see where the board and heatsink are charred from when the let go.
Im really glad that I bought this with the intention of replacing the amp assembly or else I would be upside down in this if Mosfets are even available for these.
I had 2 Carvin PB500 amps that I really liked that had blown and I never was able to find the right Mosfet Transistors anywhere.
I pulled the Toridal Transformer and the Amp board out of the TE 600 and that lightened the chassis by exactly 15 pounds and Im thinking that the Carvin 1500 only weighs 5lbs.

Hey Guys,
what Berg would you recommend me for a Trace Elliot AH350SMX?
I thought abou two small cabs. One cab would be perfect for practicing at home and the two combinded for gigs and band practicing.

I play mostly Funk, Soul, R´n´B and Motown. Sometimes also Rock and Blues and Top-40-Pop-Songs.

Any suggestions? Did you´ve ever combined Trace with Epifani or Bergantino?

I'd recommend Trace cabs 1028h and 1153t. Both are compact cabs and will give you the diverse tones you use and handle the power of the AH350SMX. Don't forget the SMX has a built in crossover for sending the lows to the 15" cabs . The 1028h has a horn built in so slapping da funk will sound great.

No experience with Bergantino and Epifani?

The Trace 1028H sounds good for home practicing and small gigs but its a damn heavy cab!

2x10's + horn isn't that heavy ...
... not the 1048H... that one is 78 lbs.

I've tried a lot of cabs but I keep going back to and now staying with Trace Elliot. I get the sound, tone and presence I want with them.
