TecAmp Puma 900 vs Aguilar AG 700

I am not the right person for the Tone Hammer so it went to a new home. Love the Puma 1000 and that is my gig amp. Both had the respective brands signature sound.

I don't have any loud gigs anymore and generally use a Fearless 15/6/1 and the Puma. I felt the clarity I like with the Tone Hammer was missing and that it was pretty noisy.

I had sold my Puma 900 and S212 8ohm a while back to try out the TH500 with a pair of SL112's after I was at NAMM. BIG MISTAKE! Though I've heard that the AG700 is very similar in tone to the Puma 900. Aesthetically, I like the Aguilar stuff more, but the tone I keep coming back to the TecAmp. My curiosity gets the best of me, so instead of selling again and being disappointed I thought I'd ask here.

The XS112 sounds great, I'm just looking for more headroom. I have a weekly residency at a hotel, that it works really well with. But any outdoor or larger room venues, my current setup just can't hang or drive the volume I need.

I like the idea of a modular system, an extra xs112, but if the S212 would be better suited for the money then I don't mind going that route. If I chose to go with a S212, I'd definitely be curious what my XS112 and the S212 would sound like paired.

But I like said, I'm very curious about Aguilar AG700

...can someone explain why you like the quilter? I played the Quilter combo with the 2x10 (that is using similar drivers than the older EA NL-210), and not only was the sound so not what I want, but the eq was not able to get me even close to how I want my bass to sound . Is it me? (sorry for derailing the thread...)

Not a fan of the quilter cabs. try the head with a cab you know you like.

To me, its warm, quick, and has just the right amount of color/not sterile. And if you crank the input, it gets a very nice "saggy"/ampeg-y feel to it. Crank the master and use the gain for volume and its tight and clean. GREAT power section feel. EQ is limited but i have plenty on my bass and pedalboard.

I've owned both the original Neo version and the newer Classic version with ceramic woofers and sound wise there is a significant difference with the Classic ceramic version sounding significantly better to my ears bringing more growl, definition and presence and less boom than the Neo version. If you have the budget, I would highly recommend the S212 Classic.

never heard the ceramic version, but I was very impressed with the neo version. Way better/more balanced than the M212, that was for sure.

hard to beat that price, but I'm not saying the newer ceramic version isnt better

What J.Wolf said. Also,to me, it's very clear and articulate. The EQ takes a while to "get" but with patience and subtle tweaking I'm able to dial in just what I like.

I'm a bit of stickler to how my equipment looks. Though the price is right, it looks like poopie! May not mean it sounds like it, but I literally can't have tears and scuffs on equipment. It's weird, I know!

I was recently remarking on when I was purchasing the Quilter and AB'ing it against the Mesa D800+. I thought the Quilter was already 95% of the way there tonally, whereas with the Mesa I said "its a good thing it has all those knobs, cuz I need them all to get the tone dialed in".

The Quilter is deceptively versatile, despite only having two tone shaping knobs. Can't say anything great about the cabs tho

yeah, great price, but cosmetically, not so much.

I'm not really much of a fan of Tecamp cab aesthetics (new or old), but have gotten over aesthetics, to some degree. I mean, I use a Quilter after all. LOL

Very cool! As you probably know, Glenn is a great guy and provides outstanding customer service! If you mention my name, Rehan, he'll know exactly who you're talking about. If you end up trying two XS112 cabs vs. an S212, please let us know you're thoughts. I've never played through an XS112 cab so I'm very curious.

Two years ago I tried out the Tecamp Puma 1000 driving an S212 at NAMM and was very impressed. Also saw Bobby Vega using an S212 at the Bass Bash that year. It sounded amazing. :thumbsup:

Edit: Found a picture of Bobby Vega from NAMM Bass Bash 2016. Looks like he was driving both a Tecamp S212 and an L410 with a Black Jag 900. I don't know how to identify if those cabinets are the "classic" versions but maybe someone else does.

Awesome! Yes, they're the Classic versions indicated by the silver cloth grill as opposed to the Neo versions, which had black metal grills. In the photo it looks like he's using two L410 Classic cabs.
