Tech 21 bass fly rig

Do you still get noise with the BFR as the only thing in the chain? Now that it has digital circuitry inside, there is a higher chance of noise issues if everything is on a daisy chain.

I used my BFR yesterday and suddenly it was unacceptably noisy! ... or I realized how noisy it is. I was on IEM's yesterday and I heard a hiss, I started muting things on the board and crap it was me! Bypassed the BFR, noise was gone. It's going back today. I guess I'll be going back to a VT bass. I'm bummed I love the form factor, the comp and even the chorus!

I had the same issue with my FR5.

In my case, the device wasn't defective or badly designed, it was just gain staging. There's a metric tonne of gain available with this thing, and if you don't get it right, you'll need a noise gate to kill the hash, just like a lead guitarist with his rig set on stun.

Thanks for the response. I will mess around this week before I send it back.

How was the Bass Fly Rig connected to the mixer? How was it set? What type of mixer and in-ear monitoring system? Wireless, hard wired? Was the input trim on the mixer correctly gain staged for the unit?

It's been pretty quiet over here lately.

How is everyone getting on with their Bass Fly Rigs?

I recently paired my FR5 with the Diamond BCP. I'm using the compressor more for the fatness it brings, than to squash the dynamics- I have the compression way down around 9 o'clock.

In 50 years of playing bass, I've never been this happy with my tone.

I love this setup as a front end to my other amps, as well as for going direct. I generally have the Sansamp on, output @ 3 o'clock, Gain at 11, Treble at 10, mids barely pushed, and bass a hair shy of noon. A little EQ goes a long way on the Fly Rig! Boost is usually between 8:30 and 9:00, and used sparingly for when I need a volume jump. Everything else off...

I'm still waiting to get mine back from Tech 21. It was sent back under warranty. I have faith that it will come back like new. Tech 21 has always been a stellar company for me. I need to try my FR5 I uses, SO always prefer my BDDI. I'll update this thread when I get mine back.

I've decided to try one of these out myself, and a stupid thought crossed my mind - is there any way t21 can update the chorus with a shorter delay time so it's more flangey? =0) I always skip chorus in favor of flange or phase, more movement in the sound. But I like the rest of the sounds I've heard out of this box in videos at least.

Still gigging regular with mine. Haven't had a noise or reliability issue yet. Still pretty much the same opinion - it is not a be-all/end-all, but it is a really really neat compact unit that does a nice job. If I'm listing quirks/wishlist for the v2.0, here they be -

- maybe an L-shaped power connector - and move it away from the output jack. Minor quibble. Tons of real estate back there, why are the power & output jack on top of each other?

- An aux input would be so awesome. Fun practice amp.

- A couple storeable presets also would be so great.

- The packing box is an impressive tin - but I'd rather they put that money into a little padded case for it. It's hardy enough that I don't want to carry the big tin thing, but would be nice to have a bit of a cover for transport.

- Octave without fuzz. Very minor. As mentioned, adjusted appropriately, you'll likely not hear it in the mix anyway.

Again - easily worth the $300.

In general it would seem that many were expecting far greater things from a very small box. It is what is, I don't think you could fit much more, or expect much more performance for that size. I'm going to couple this with some Mooer pedals to keep it all compact and have a bit more versatility.

+1 on the case instead of tin

One other request: seems it should be possible to reduce the size of the power supply to where it's not much bigger then a normal ac plug. The BFR doesn't consume much power, if T21 made a concerted effort to make a smps supply just for the fly rigs it would be tiny. To the point where it could fit right into the carry case mentioned above.

I have a fairly elaborate analog(Mostly) pedal board and ordered the BFR and should receive it this week. I look forward to not having to bring the large SKB PS45 pedalboard to smaller gigs/jams. I have multiple systems to audition it with and will check for noise/gain staging since that seemed to be an issue in this thread. Looking forward!

Stay tuned...

Two weeks with my BFR. I concur with many of the other posts; SansAmp works awesome, Envelope Filter is OK and the Octaver is useless. That being said, I'm not a fan of most octavers; I've found if they only do octave below, they usually track poorly. Chorus works great, but my last one was an E-H Neo Clone, so I'm used to few controls. I'm in a band that goes PA only, so this pedal works great for me. Overall, this thing is perfect for what I do, but I can see why it wouldn't be for everyone.
