Tech 21 bass fly rig

that's one way yes, another way is to jack the comp octive on, and play with that range control lower that q though or it'll envelope on you... as you rightly said, it depends on that sound your after, say you want a funky octiver than maybe that q needs to be up a bit or even up entirely, all depends on what your after. also I have noticed the eq on the sansamp plays into this also. so play with that. if you set it correctly the range acts as a tone control, to do that you have to lower the q down entirely.
I find that to get a decent octave effect - Mix at 12 o'clock and the Q and Range knobs are all the way off.

That and lowering the signal gain by lowering the Compressor level really gets me back into OC-2 territory.

Of course, everyone's gear is different as is everyone's sound that they're aiming for.

I'm just saying what works for me. This is also using passive Fender basses - Precision with EB flats and Jazz bass V with Sunbeams.

I think the Octafilter gets a lot of bad press, but for what they intended, it actually works pretty well with some knob tweaking.
It’s not so great for fast 16th note runs, but it cops synthy tones pretty well.

Its even better as just a filter with dirt from the Sansamp. With a Boss Oc-2 in front of the fly rig, it sounds pretty awesome.

I’ve also been comparing and pairing the Fly Rig with a Zoom B3. I prefer the dirt tones in the Fly Rig, but the B3 has a ton of effects that work well in front. I had found the 3 effects limit of the B3 a little meager at times, especially when using compression, dirt/preamp. That setup left only one slot for modulation or time based effects. With the Fly Rig, I can use the B3 mostly for modulation , filters, delay, or even additional distortion or fuzz and octave. I thought they’d be redundant, but it looks like they can be pretty complimentary.

what settings are you using when trying 16th notes and the filter? cut the q down and use range as tone and hit fuzz and maybe octive, see if that doesn't help thicken it up and work with your 16ths better.

I’d agree that the octofuzz section is not very good over all. I was pleasantly surprised that there were a few usable tones in there though. A lot of folks posted that it’s completely worthless, and while it doesn’t really fit my needs particularly well, I can see myself using those effects in a pinch.

Honestly, the compressor isn’t my favorite either, but again, the form factor, size, and ease of use for travel is hard to beat.

it’s a lot more complicated for me to have my Korg Ptichblack, BDDI, Smoothie, Bass Boost Chorus, OC2, FX25b, Mastotron, and a couple of boost pedals. The individual pedals sound much better to me, and give me a lot more flexibility, but lugging those pedals around with a power supply is a hassle locally. I really have no interest in traveling with all of them.

I’m always impressed with how many folks on this forum make clean and neat pedal boards. My attempts seem a bit messy and even with new cables, the connections seem to be constant potential failure points, not to mention how pedal order turns into a small obsession over time.

try playing with the range and q controls especially the range, lower the q entirely and then use the range as a tone for the fuzz. you may be pleasantly surprised.

I have. It’s just not good. Regardless of how many times you bump my posts it’s not going to get any better. It’s not like turning knobs is particularly insightful, they’re right their on the front just waiting to be turned, problem is they don’t actually make it sound good, just marginally less terrible.

What the octafilter excels at is the quasi-Moog thing. My complaint is that it’s not really good at anything else. IMO, it’s a whole section the pedal that’s dedicated to a sound that not a lot of bassists will ever use. I’d rather they replace it with something that’s more useful/less gimmicky.

YMMV.

I'm not much into the Fuzz or Octave but if somebody could provide a single funky filter setting, I'd be a happy camper. I'm really not very good at this sort of thing.
