I don't have any problem getting the mids I need out of my BDDI by keeping the blend between 12-1 and backing off the low end. I have an RBI that has the mid control and I prefer the BDDI. I use it direct into a power amp into my speakers and could not be happier.

Tech 21 BDDI...

Man, you guys make me feel like I am missing something. I thought I got along fine with my english muff'n and the direct out on the back of the head. I have to confess I, too, was a bit underwhelmed at the thing, but OTOH, I only played with it for about thirty minutes in GC.
Well, I gave in and bought the used SABDDI for $120 Canadian today. Its the older one without the extra boost switches for the outputs but I figured it was a great deal as it looks mint and a new one is $235.
The same store is blowing out the programmable version for $150 which is a killer deal. I gotta say tho, I tried them both and there's something about the basic one that I liked a little better. can't explain it really but it seemed more solid and the knops felt nicer to turn. Anyway, I am tight for cash and really only wanted this thing to be something I can throw in the pocket of my gig bag in the event that I cant take an amp.
I highly doubt at this time it would find a place on my pedal board as I have a Fulltone Bassdrive and a Little Big Muff. But you never know.
Just playing with it a second time in the store and taking the advice of you fine people with regards to settings, has already got me liking it more. I decided, there is no way this could be a bad deal as at the very least, it would be a great backup to carry with you to gigs.
Do many of you have a SABBDI actually as part of your pedal board? I assume it would have to be last in line if it was to be used as a DI. I will be fiddling with it tonight and will post my thoughts on it a little later. So far, I'm glad I picked it up. I really had no use for the programmable version, it was a little too big and the smaller version just has a cooler vibe to me.

My PBDDI goes in my gig bag to every gig to use as a DI if needed, or to have those three tones available at my toes. Or, if the big rig isn't needed, it does just fine on it's own. Handy dandy, and I'd replace it the next day if something happened to it.
I could say that I wish I'd waited for the sale, but I've gotten a lot of use out of mine already, and I'm still very happy even though I paid $200 for it.

Well. I spent some time tonight messing with the SABDDI. I ran my SR5 into it then straight into my big rig (BBE BMax, GK RB800, Eden 2X10, 1X15) I think the first time I tried one of these I wasn't grasping the concept of hoe they work.
By cutting the treble and presence I was able to get a very warm thick tone that still retained some good punch. Very nice and I am really pleased that I gave it a second chance. (I had bought one earlier this year and returned it a day later)
My only real complaint is that when plugged into the SABDDI and the footswitch off, there is a pretty bad tone suck going on. The difference in my tone, punch and clarity is really noticeable when you plug the bass back into the amp directly.
But when you engage the footswitch, it really does have some great possibilites. I still can't imaging incorporating the the bass driver into my pedal board as the tone suck is pretty bad. But as a seperate little rig in the palm of your hand, it does impress.
I've been playing bass for over 20 years. These things have been around for a long time and I'm finally trying one out!! Oh well, better late than never.

...rolling the bass and treble off and maxing the blend is far more effective, IMO. You still get the benefit of the tube emulation which is significantly diminished when you roll the blend back.
I heartily recommend giving this a shot this to anyone who has tried a SABDDI without success. I nearly gave up on mine until I tried this...

The blue curve on the pic shows the signal with SABDII off, the yellow one is with the SABDDI on with the following settings.
Blend: Full on
Treble, bass, presence and drive: 12 o'clock
Level: Set for equal recording input level between on/off setting.
As you can see there is no missing the midscoop. It is pretty obvious. The big boosts above 100Hz and above 1000Hz can be attenuated by the bass and treble controls respectively but even with bass and treble fully off there is still a midscoop (if blend is full on).

I try all my pedals in a loooper as soon as I get them in order to test if there is a bad bypass sound. I never experienced anything of the above with any of my Bassdriver DI (I own 2 programmbale ones, 1 original) or the Acoustic DI.
The only Tech21 pedal I experienced this was the (original, not reissue or classic) SansAmp pedal. But this unit hasn't been designed as an "effect" per se. It was one of the first guitar DI preamps.
Even my GT2 has got a clean bypass.
My PBDDI doesn't affect my tone in the slightest when bypassed. Is your BDDI an older model or brand new?Crabby said:
Its an older one. It has no battery door and no switches on it to increase the output stage like the newer ones. Maybe I should compare it to a new progammable one. I will try it in my looper pedal to be certain but I wasn't too impressed with the bypass sound. I guess this is the kind of pedal you would just leave on all the time anyway.

I have one of the newer nonprogrammable SABDDI's, and I can definitely hear it sucking some tone out when bypassed. Does NOT sound the same bypassed as unplugging it and going straight into an amp. Not a massive issue for me as I just unplug it if I don't want it engaged. I don't do effects. One amp setting per show, tone changes with onboard pre and technique.
