Tech 21 Club

Happy Father's day dads!

I was just recently passed the drum track for my band's next recording, so with the hopes of being productive I got up at 5:00 to get some early morning recording in over a cup of coffee before the kids get up.

Not a bad way to spend a morning really. Coffee, Precision, VTDI, and my 1001RB into my new Scarlett 2i2.

Here's a quick sample - it needs at least one punch and maybe a little editing, but probably pretty close to final. Enjoying a relatively low Character setting here.

Warning, it's a bit of a slow burn.

Oh, and I mentioned that I have my GK in the mix as well - I've been feeling the need lately for a stronger HPF than what my VTDI has to offer, and my GK in 4-string mode seems pretty perfect - see below for a shot of the original signal (green) and signal with stronger lows attenuation engaged (blue) via the GK:

Let's see if I can convince my sound engineer (drummer) to leave it be and not pass me any higher! :p

Well, that sure was short lived :roflmao:

Let's see if we can revive it ;)

While I might not quite have the technique, the chops, ...or the guns for that matter of @MDBass , his great videos have inspired me to take a crack at putting together my own low-budge' version for one of the tracks that I'm currently in the middle of finishing up.

I know I've posted a few short samples before using some of these bass parts, but this is the full version... and with a proper drum track!

Just my Precision as you can see, into my VTDI with a relatively scooped Character setting and then through my 1001RB (EQ'd dead flat, but in 4-string mode for a little extra low-end roll off).

Recorded using my Focusrite 2i2 and Reaper.

If I ever decide to do another one of these, I really need to look into a less crummy camera than the one on my phone and a less frustrating video editor than the default Windows-whatever version... :bored:

Hey Kro...nice playing and great tone!

Thanks for the kind words Al! It only took 6 months or so of trial and error, but (knock on wood) I think I'm finally becoming satisfied with the tones that I'm getting from my Precision :p - at least for the current soundscapes I find myself in. I've now used a similar tonal profile for two tracks in a row, a first for my self-recording era. :) Usually, with me, as soon as a session wraps I'm already thinking of what I want to change for the next time around!

Anybody else do any recordings with SansAmps lately that they'd be willing to share? Some threads are useless without pictures - I tend to think that what this thread needs is audio!

IME Tech 21 kit is pretty ubiquitous in the real world when it comes to tracking... surely somebody has something... ;)

Just getting started actually (starting an album with the rock band). Will post soon as I can manage a clean track!

Thanks!

Looks pretty fancy. Love the cafe lights. :p

That's awesome! Looking forward to hearing it - are you recording bass yourself, or in a studio?

We are doing the recording ourselves with a ZOOM L12 (we might hire a studio to do the final mix or we might do it with Studio One). Im going direct for Bass (through my Paradriver). Guit guy is micing his cab.

Most excellent, Kro! :bassist:

Once I finish off the layaway payments on my Mesa PH610 cabinet, I look forward to post a few photos of my GED-2112/Crest CA9/Mesa PH212s/Mesa PH610 rig here.

I don't have the ability to post sound clips, but if you live in the Salt Lake City area, you might be able to hear it, before my neighbors call the cops. :woot:

Very cool. I just googled that ZOOM model, as I wasn't familiar with it, and it seems pretty nifty. It threw me off for a bit when you noted that the final mix might be done in Studio One, as I was thinking, "wait... what DAW are they using now"?

It's obvious when I actually think about it, but I guess it can be easy to forget in this day and age that there are good recording options available that don't require a traditional computer.

Thanks! Looking forward to seeing your full setup. I live on the East coast, but given your rig, I still may be able to hear you if you crank it! ;)

I actually traded in my Audiobox against the Zoom. Im old school and like the fact that it doesnt need a host computer or tablet. It can still be used as a 12 track audio interface with Studio One (or other). Nice unit, it has its idiosyncrasies but Im pleased with it. My biggest gripe is that they came out with L20 just after I bought my L12.

Here are some work in progress takes:
Paradriver into L12. Take 1 is with Labella flats, take 2 is with Swing Bass.

I just took a quick listen to them through my computer desktop speakers which are of dubious quality (that's a test unto itself: is bass audible at all on crappy speakers?) - and it still sounded very nice. Looking forward to giving them a listen a little later on a more respectable system!

@Kro love it! Sounds great!
