Tech 21 - NYC Boost Chorus Bass

Have had a chance to use it a few times now, and I'm definitely keeping it-the detune/multi-voice function is very, very cool. I always wanted a chorus where you could turn off the modulation and just do fixed slight pitch shifting. The depth/speed controls even when cranked seem rather subtle to me, at least compared to a lot of other chorus pedals-Probably not the best choice if you want a vibrato kind of sound. Also sounds really awesome behind distortion, the multi-voice helps if you want a wall of sound. Could also probably cop a bit of a pseudo 8 string sound if you turn the tone all the way up, mix 50%, and pitch up without the multivoice.

Well ......... I am now waiting for delivery of my new Tech21 Bass Chorus. i really like the detune feature in the demo.

This pedal will supercede:

t.c. Electronics Chorus/Flanger
t.c. Electronics Corona Chorus
Boss 5 Chorus (forget the actual model number)
Liquid Chorus
MXR Zakk Wylde Chorus
MXR Micro Chorus
T-Rex Sweeper Chorus
Hardwire CR-7 Chorus
Fender Chorus
Electro Harmonix Chorus (forget which one that is too)

whew ..... need a break .....

I sure hope this one does the trick. My favorite was the t.c. Electronics Chorus Flanger but built in power cord was a drag on my pedal board so I (like a dummy) sold it and have never captured the fatness of it since. I do have to say that I experienced a slight loss of power when it was engaged and that was a little disturbing too. The bass is a Lakland USA Bob Glaub with P/J's so it's passive and the amp is an Aguilar AG500 with 2 DB112 cabinets.

Anyway ... I am embarking on my new chorus du jour shortly. i really do have high hopes on this one!

I really should invest in a video camera so I can do demos/clips of these things.
Anyway, still really love it, have found a few settings that I really like. What's interesting is how the little multi-voice button interacts with the detune control: If the detune control is set sharp and you engage the multi-voice, the 2nd voice will be the opposite or slightly flat. However if you move the detune knob ccw (more flat) the 2nd voice still remains flat as well, but slightly "trails" the first. You can get a really cool, dark, spooky kind of sound if you set the detune as flat as possible with the multi-voice on, the tone rolled off and the speed and depth up a bit.
It definitely gets sounds I haven't heard in any other chorus pedal. With that said, the speed/mod are kinda subtle compared to other choruses I have had in the past (MXR Stereo, Danelectro Cool Cat, etc.) so as I stated earlier, maybe not the best pedal for folks wanting really "liquidy" chorus sounds or deep vibrato kind of stuff.

I'd be interested in some of those videos and clips to hear what others get for sounds and maybe even the dial settings!

I'm the classic guy that thinks the paperwork and instructions are only for padding and jump right into it not knowing what I'm doing ..... terrible habit!

Yes, but unlike Justin Bieber, the copywriters at Tech 21 make no attempts to hide what they're selling. Because everybody knows that inappropriately-named companies (since I've never heard of any NYC neighborhood called "Clifton, NJ") that sell boxes that you plug your guitar into are far more trustworthy than some perfectly-coiffed Canadian kid whose fashion cues come straight from 1980. Or, more accurately, and to his credit, more trustworthy than the guy who put him up to all of this: Usher Raymond IV.

"Because of the way traditional chorus pedals typically interact with their amps, most bass players would rather put an angry badger on their pedalboard." I guess Mr. B. Andrew Barta has never met me - well, okay, he hasn't - because my chorus interacts brilliantly with my amp. Mind you, I use a Roland Jazz Chorus, but still...

Anyway, I haven't tried either Boost Chorus. I assure you, loyal readers, the whole six of you still remaining, that I will, and there will be some sort of writing on the subject. But, to tide me over until such time, would someone please kindly donate a Strymon Ola?

I seem to have become TalkBass' resident Criswell, and, like the late psychic genius, I have made another claim that is unlikely to come to pass. Since I'm on some waiting list for a Moog ClusterFlux (meaning that I've pre-ordered one, and I have to wait patiently until September), all future pedal purchases are suspended indefinitely. In other words, there is absolutely no chance that I will try this pedal before the Moog arrives. Sure, it's theoretically possible that I can try one out at a local Tech 21 dealer, but I only have two local Tech 21 dealers, Guitar Center Madison and Full Compass (which is in adjacent Middleton), and neither of them have it. Therefore, no long-winded, vaguely relevant and simply unfunny review from this bard's pen.

Am I upset with the unavailable pedal? Am I upset that I am not the clairvoyant I claimed to be? Not at all. I'm getting what is said to be a very rare pedal; it just so happens to also meet my requirements for chorus and flanger effects. I am, for the first time in quite a while, pleased with the progress my pedalboard has made, and will probably be cured of my GAS this September.

Thanks for the comments Waterpilot.

This is my first Chorus pedal for bass only, the other ones I have had are multi effects, Like Boss and Behringer. Compared to them this one is like a dream, Is's so easy to get good sounds from it.

I have stopped using multi effects, single stomp boxes are so much better and easier to work with.
