Tech 21 pedals - if you could have only one?

Tech 21 have produced some truly iconic kit over the years. Really interested to hear from you on which your favourite pedal(s) from their range has been, particularly if you've had the chance to use and A/B more than one. If you could only save one from the proverbial fire, which would you go for?

Tech 21 Red Ripper would be my vote here. When I went looking for something like this, I did an online search, and this one was highly recommended. I always take "reviews" with a grain of salt, since everyone has their own opinion. You can do a "Google" search on this one and get lot's of information including sound clips that are better than anything I could provide. Also the company's web site has the Manual available to view (pdf) in the archive section, as I don't think they are currently in production. Got mine used in almost mint condition on Reverb.com. I'll see if I can include a picture.

Kinda cool that the first response on this thread was a Red Ripper - happens to be the one Tech 21 pedal currently in my arsenal, so it didn't take long to flush me out! Like you, I managed to get a pretty mint one, mine was new 'old stock' being sold at a clearance price so I snapped it up. However, would it be fair to say that the Red Ripper is a little bit on its own in terms of the more classic SansAmp sound?

I guess I've got budget and pedal board space for one more Tech 21 pedal ('cos unfortunately they're certainly not cheap on this side of the Pond!). There's been a flurry of new pedals coming out of the Tech 21 stable over the last couple of years and it would be great to hear from you on which ones you've particularly liked and your all time fav Tech 21 pedal.

I only have one of theirs, but man do I love it. It's the dUg pedal. It has tone for days and I can make it sound awesome from any of my 3 basses. I don't use the crunch and drive much because I mostly play in church right now, but I jam to King's X and record stuff of my own with that dUg tone and it's so thick and ridiculous.

But, if you turn off the dirty, the pedal runs the clean side which pretty much is like a SansAmp, so you're getting 2 for the price of 1. I have a dedicated tuner already, but this one also has a tuner built in. What a great pedal. Definitely my favorite.

Out of these I haven't got a real favourite as they all do different things for me. Currently I am using the Geddy Lee YYZ pedal the most but that is probably because it is my latest purchase. All of the Tech21 pedals that are on show I would recommend to any Bassist

Ah just the guy who's experience I need to draw on. So if you really had to save just one of that rather tasty Tech 21 collection from the proverbial fire, which one would it be and why?

PS fair to mention I've also had a Q\Strip in my time and it's one of the very best EQ pedals out there, although another of the less 'mainstream' Tech 21 core SansAmp sound pedals. However having got a Helix, I kinda felt I could do a bunch of tone shaping with that, so I moved my Q\Strip on.

I tend to cycle Tech 21 pedals in and out, and the VT Bass V1 has been with me since its introduction in '08, which I imagine means it's my favorite. (?) BUT I really dig my dUg, delight in my Para Driver, and am looking forward to mastering the mysteries of my PSA 2.0.

Past kudos to my departed Leeds, SH1, YYZ, and others ... you were great, too, but I'm a rambling guy ...

Definitely between the VTDI and DP3X.

The VTDI is the most versatile, so if having to choose one, I guess that'd be it. With the character at 3 o'clock, blend backed off to 11 o'clock, it's quite Geddy like and I prefer it to the YYZ (and SH1 for that matter). But take the bite off, whack the blend up, and you can get vintage B15 tones too.

There's so many that I haven't yet tried. For a while I was really digging on the VT Bass, but the Oxford bumped that (and several dirts) off the board. They both contain such a wide range of capable sounds! Tech 21 rocks

So hopefully I have the ear of some Tech 21 Guru's out there. Do they make, or have ever made a delay pedal that will work with a BASS well ? If I could get a name or model number, I can take things from there. Thanks!

I am partial to the Tech 21 California Character Series pedal but missed buying one when they were available. I have the Invalid Link Removed clone that is constantly on my desk for bass and guitar tones both clean and saturated.

Sorry which were their "iconic" pedals? I seem to have completely missed them. I just associate them with Ampeg simulator pedals that don't sound like any Ampeg I have ever heard.

The VTDI is a gem. Love the BDDI. The Bass Boost Chorus is my favorite chorus and has outlasted the MXR BCD and Providence Anadime...

That's a lot of great releases... But I'm not sure I can get rid of the VTDI.

The VT Bass DI (aka VTDI) seems to be getting a lot love already in terms of the "tried and tested" generation of Tech 21 pedals. I clearly need to have another look at that one, I can tell!

I would try them out first and see which one suits you best as some have more functions than others like an XLR, Blend function and pedals that can be programmable. The Classic series of pedals gave some great options of classic American and British amps but some of them like the Leeds pedal which I own have now been dis continued. Have fun researching!

I really enjoy the BFR but recently replaced it with a dUg pedal. I miss the chorus option but I like the drive, tone stack, and compressor a bit more. Using it finger-style for country & classics which is a departure from the intended / advertised applications (dirt, OD, etc). The dUg really sings in an ensemble setting.

Just bought a 2008 DLA on Reverb, mint condition. Will see how well it gets along with the red ripper. We keep everyone posted.

Probably the VTDI. It's been my favorite out of all them I have tried. The blend function is magic.
