Tech 21 Rackmount Preamps

Indeed.
I waited over a year for a Garrett binocular telescope that continues to be vaporware.
They said the factory in China moved, then it burnt down.
The only excuse not provided was "the dog ate my homework".

It is now mid-September, and Tech21 has certainly missed the July ship date.
IMO, they should remove the product from their website until their problems are corrected.

I picked up an RPM instead.

They all sound great live. I was playing a full swr rig (750 & goliath sr.) when I got my RBI. I wanted to be able to get more of a rounder rock tone. I've used the RBI since it was released and use it for any style. The trick is to use the blend knob as a tone control. I haven't touched my eq or gain for a long long time. If i want more of a rock/metal tone the blend is at around 2 o'clock. But if i want a more transparent tone for slapping or whatever i just turn the blend down to about 10 o'clock and it cleans up nicely.

From this I would simply infer "the VTRM be ready when it's ready", and no one there knows when. No reason to answer the question if they don't know the answer. My hunch would be that they're focused on other products. I've been doing what I can to show interest in the VTRM so they can shift focus to it. :p

In the meantime, it's been too long since I've used my RBI and/or RPM; I need to gig them again soon.

FWIW, I sold my SVP-Pro and 7picked up a new VTRM from Sweetwater.
This is definitely a bass players' preamp, as it is not All-That for my keys.
However, VTRM is All-That for a bassist.

I'm using an RPM + VTRM chained and foot-switched as Either/Or for my general purpose biamp rig.
This handles keys, electric bass, clean 12-string guitar, lap steel and banjo.
It can drive any combination of subs and tops as needed.

Today, I picked up another RPM to replace a Rane MLM42 preamp in our edrum rig.
The RPM is much more rack friendly because the input jack is on the front, and it does not require a wall-wart power supply.
We use the RPM + Crest ProLite2, biamped into the edrum subs and tops.
Our tracks are written in MIDI, converted to .WAV and executed from an iPod plugged into the RPM.

IMO, the RPM is the most versatile of the Sansamp rack preamps. YMMV.

As I've said in other threads the VTRM is my new favorite SansAmp rack pre, but I still love the RBI. The BDDI isn't everyone's cup of tea because it gets scooped as you turn Blend to full, but it's been a recording studio staple for decades. The RBI gives you all the BDDI tone plus additional connectivity options. One reason I'll always love the RBI is because the Presence control adds great sparkle to tweeterless bass cabs.

Again, my favorite rig for a long time was running the RBI + RPM in parallel (JGR's config: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/something-cool-sansamp-rbi-rpm-users-317368/#post3957394). I'm definitely going to try VTRM and RPM in parallel when I get a chance, should be lots of fun.

I tried out my own RPM with out eDrum kit and loved it.
I wanted the RPM back in my keys rig, so I pulled it out and replaced it with a Rane MLM42 preamp.
The Rane works well, but it uses a wall wart and the inputs are on the rear of the preamp. A real PITA.

This week I picked up a second RPM from TB classifieds.
The new RPM is going permanently into the drum rig and will replace the Rane.
The RPM is ideal for edrums.
